A plea to broadcasters

A plea to broadcasters
Coventry City begin their Championship campaign with a home match against Hull City (Barrington Coombs/PA)

Even those of us (well, most of us) who were less than impressed when Mark Robins was given the shove last season, have warmed to Frank Lampard, not least because he got us travelling up the table again.

I’m looking forward to see if he can finally get us back to the promised land this year. However, before we do so much as kick a ball, I want to make a plea to all broadcasters.

On the opening day of the Championship season, it will be Coventry City against Hull City – not Frank Lampard’s Coventry against Sergej Jakirovic’s Hull. In the same way, Gary Neville will not be previewing the Premier League opener by discussing who will come out on top between “Arne Slot’s Liverpool and Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth.”

We have not changed our name to “Frank Lampard’s Coventry City”. We’ve only changed our name once and that was in 1898, when we stopped being Singers FC and became the mighty CCFC. We have a proud history, one of the very few teams never to be beaten in an FA Cup Final and one of the longest uninterrupted runs  in the top  division (34 years between 1967 and 2001).

Yes, Frank was a great player and may turn out to be a great manager, but he’s not bigger than our great club.

 Quiz

By the way, here’s a good football quiz question for you.

Name the four post-war teams to have both won the FA Cup and never lost a final. Answer in the next CCFC post.
