Atlético Madrid have officially ended their interest in Tottenham Hotspur’s star defender Cristian Romero, according to a report from The Athletic. The La Liga giants have shifted their focus to alternative defensive targets, as they believe Tottenham are now prioritizing securing Romero with a new contract.

Romero’s Contract Talks Gain Momentum

The 27-year-old Argentine, a key figure in Spurs’ backline, has two years remaining on his current deal with the North London club. Atlético’s decision to step back comes as Tottenham appear poised to extend Romero’s contract, signalling their intent to retain the World Cup-winning centre-back for the long term.

Romero, who joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021, has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top defenders, known for his aggressive style, leadership, and composure on the ball. His performances have made him a cornerstone of Spurs’ squad, and the club is keen to fend off interest from European heavyweights like Atlético.

Frank's Squad Building

Tottenham Hotspur have had an active and ambitious summer transfer window so far, signalling a strong intent to bolster their squad ahead of the 2025–26 season. The club made a major statement by signing Mohammed Kudus from West Ham for around £55 million, marking a rare direct transfer between the two clubs. They are also on the verge of finalizing a £60 million deal for Morgan Gibbs‑White from Nottingham Forest, who impressed last season with seven goals and eight assists. Defensively, Spurs have added Kevin Danso from RC Lens for £21 million and completed the permanent signing of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich after a successful loan spell, reportedly for £30 million. Promising young centre-backs Luka Vušković and Kōta Takai have also joined, adding long-term depth to the back line, while Max McFadden arrived on a free from Leeds United to reinforce the developmental squad.

In terms of outgoings, Tottenham have moved on several players, including Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, who joined Marseille, and others like Fraser Forster, Sergio Reguilón, and Timo Werner, who either left upon contract expiry or returned to their parent clubs. Under new manager Thomas Frank, Spurs are clearly undergoing a squad refresh, with a focus on creative midfielders and defensive stability, likely in preparation for a return to European competition. With spending already close to £183 million, the club may still pursue further additions.
