Rice didn’t hold back in addressing the early criticism directed at Madueke, while also offering insight into the player’s mentality and hunger to succeed in North London.

“I Didn’t Like It” – Rice on the Fan Backlash
“There’s obviously been a lot of talk around his signing,” Rice said. “I didn’t like it, if I’m speaking honestly. But I know how driven he is. I’ve spoken to him and you’re going to see what he’s about this season.”
With Arsenal fans split on the £55 million move for Madueke — questioning his consistency and injury record — Rice’s public backing comes at the perfect time. The England international made it clear that those inside the game have no doubts about what Madueke can bring to the squad.
“There’s a Hunger in His Belly”
“He’s so driven, and he’s proven. He wants to prove, and show everyone, what he can do,” Rice added. “There’s a hunger inside his belly.”
Rice highlighted Madueke’s determination to silence doubters, pointing to the attacker’s mindset as a key reason for optimism ahead of the new season.
“When he signed, he had like 10 or 11 people with him — that excitement, it’s a good thing. He’s hungry, he wants to play for Arsenal, and those are the type of players we want.”

“He’s Going to Shock a Lot of People”
Madueke, who arrived at Arsenal following a mixed spell at Chelsea, is expected to play a key role under Mikel Arteta. His ability to operate across the front line, combined with his technical ability and flair, could give Arsenal an extra dimension in the final third.
“I think he’s going to shock a lot of people,” Rice concluded. “And I can’t wait for him to come.”
Backed From Within
While social media remains divided, Rice’s comments signal strong belief within the dressing room that Madueke can deliver — and potentially thrive in a more structured, disciplined setup under Arteta.
As pre-season progresses, all eyes will be on the former Chelsea winger to prove the doubters wrong. If his teammate is right, Arsenal fans could be in for a pleasant surprise.
