Arsenal move
Lucky, lucky Arsenal to have (finally) bought the best striker in Europe. That’s not just the view of Sky Blues fans who were lucky enough to see Viktor Gyokeres up close for two seasons but backed up by the statistics. He played 66 times in the League for Sporting and scored 68 goals and made 17 assists – that’s six more than Harry Kane netted for Bayern in the same last two seasons.
Sell-on clause
While Coventry fans would rather be seeing him turn out at the CBS Arena, there are some (well, 5 ½ million) crumbs of comfort. We negotiated a 10% sell-on clause as part of the original £20m that saw Gyokeres move to Lisbon back in the summer of 2023. With Arsenal set to pay £55m for the forward imminently, the Sky Blues stand to receive a tidy £5.5m bonus. Nobody seems to know whether we will also get a tenth of the add-ons that are almost bound to accrue.

However, it is worth noting that we are missing out on a further £2.25m after they sold 5% of the 15% sell-on clause back to Sporting last summer. Mind you Brighton (the Kings of flipping football players) have done even better with a 15% sell-on clause.
Frank Lampard has plenty of dosh for new players, so it’s about time he cracked on and bought some before the season starts. So far he has spent the princely sum of £2.2m on Kaine Kessler-Hayden with keeper Carl Rushworth coming on loan from Brighton and let back Miguel Angel Brau on a free from Granada.
