FC Barcelona have announced that rising star Lamine Yamal will wear the club’s iconic number 10 jersey. The news was revealed through a creative cartoon-style video titled “Our New 10”, showcasing Yamal’s journey and the most iconic moments in Barça colors.

Alongside the number switch, Barcelona confirmed that Yamal who turned 18 on Sunday has officially renewed his contract until 2031, with the ceremony held at the Spotify Camp Nou offices.

Grandmother Fátima: A driving force behind Yamal's rise

Wednesday's milestone marked a second signing event, the first of which occurred on 27 May, but without two of the people closest to him: his paternal grandmother, Fátima, and his younger brother, Keyne. Fátima holds a special place in Yamal’s life. She arrived alone in Spain from Morocco in 1990, working seasonal jobs to bring her five children to the country. More than just a matriarch, she became a pillar in Lamine’s upbringing, especially during his separation from his parents.
Her support and sacrifices laid the foundation for Yamal’s life in Barcelona, and she even bought him his first house when he began gaining recognition.
It was crucial for Yamal that his entire family, especially his grandmother, was present for this milestone moment.

Also in attendance were his father, Mounir Nasraoui, his mother, Sheila Ebana, and other family members, marking a full-circle moment of unity and pride. The official photo session with club president Joan Laporta, sporting director Deco, and technical secretary took place after Yamal trained at the Ciutat Esportiva.

Mural unveiled in Rocafonda to honor number change

To commemorate the big reveal, a mural was unveiled in Rocafonda, Yamal’s hometown, showcasing the official number change. The announcement sparked huge fan excitement, and the new No. 10 shirt is now available at the Barça Botiga, where it is expected to be a top seller.

A new chapter for Barça’s youngest star

Yamal inherits the number 10 shirt from his good friend Ansu Fati following his departure to AS Monaco. Fati, who was once hailed as Lionel Messi’s natural successor, took over the shirt in 2021 after Messi’s emotional departure to PSG. Now, with Fati loaned out and facing an uncertain future, the baton has been passed to Yamal.

Yamal is widely seen as the face of Barça’s new generation. He has felt like a household name at Barca for a while now. He won the LaLiga and the Copa Del Rey this season, and he shone on the biggest stage in the Champions League. Since then, he has become a Ballon d'Or contender."Messi, Maradona, and Ronaldinho are football legends, They have been three incredible players; Messi still is. I will try to continue that legacy." Yamal told Mundo Deportivo after the ceremony.
