Manchester City set to rival Liverpool for Marc Guehi
Manchester City are interested in signing Marc Guehi in 2026.

Manchester City are ready to rival Liverpool for the signing of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, who is a free agent next summer.

According to John Cross City are 'huge admirers' of the England defender and will battle against Liverpool to capture his signature next summer.

Guehi looked set to join the side from Anfield for £35 million this summer but the deal fell through on deadline day after he had completed a medical with the club due to Palace being unable to secure a replacement.

Marc Guehi's contract runs out at the end of the season.

As just 25 years of age, Guehi has captained Palace to their first ever FA Cup trophy as well as the Community Shield at the beginning of this season.

Liverpool seemed certain to sign him on deadline day but Palace's deal for Igor Julio collapsed and so the Eagles stopped the English international from completing his move to Anfield just before the deadline passed.

There were rumours that the Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner threatened to resign if Guehi was allowed to leave, but Glasner himself has strongly shut down those rumours.

"I never threatened to leave the club. Never. I didn't have to threaten anybody. There were no bad tensions between the chairman and myself.
It was really just a discussion about sports, and he decided against the money and for the sporting perspective of Crystal Palace. Big credit to the chairman."

Next summer Marc Guehi will have all the power as to where he wants to go and he will be able to demand bigger wages with the interest from several Premier League clubs as well as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

John Stones' contract expires in the summer of 2026.

Why do City need Guehi?

John Stones has been at Manchester City since Pep Guardiola's first season in charge and for the majority of Pep's tenure has been one of the most important players in the system that City play.

But over the past couple of seasons his age and fitness levels have certainly caught up with him which is shown by the number of injuries he's suffered since the treble winning campaign in 2022/23.

With six injuries in two years, Stones has missed almost 50 games and with his contract expiring at the end of the year Guehi could be the perfect replacement for the 31-year-old from Barnsley.

Stones and Guehi were actually centre back partners at Euro 2024 in which their solid defensive line helped England to a second consecutive Euros final.

Nathan Ake is another City defender who could be on the move soon with his injury issues and with the age he is getting to now.

Marc Guehi can play either right or left sided centre back and so he could be a good replacement for either Stones or Ake if either of them were to leave at the end of the season.
