In a somewhat surprising move, Manchester City Women have announced that they have signed Scottish goalkeeper Eartha Cumings on a three year contract from Swedish champions FC Rosengård.

Swedish connection
A difficult season for City Women saw a large amount of change, with new director of football Therese Sjögran joining the club in December, also from FC Rosengård, as well as former Denmark coach Andrée Jeglertz signing a 4-year contract as manager. Sjögran has made use of her former club, helping City to the signing of a keeper that kept 19 clean sheets in 26 appearances during the 2024 season.
Goalkeeper Overload
The signing has sparked some confusion among fans, as the club now employs three goalkeepers who will all be expecting to be the club’s starter. England backup Khiara Keating started just over half of City’s league games last season, with Japanese keeper Ayaka Yamashita starting the rest. With a situation between the goalposts that already seemed unorthodox, the decision to add a third, especially one who won her league’s Goalkeeper of the Year award last season, must surely signal that either an exit is in the works or an injury that has not been made public yet has struck.
Who is Eartha Cumings?
Cumings is a 26 year old Scottish keeper. She joined Rosengård in 2023 from Liverpool, who she only made two appearances for. Before her move to Sweden, her only experience as a consistent starter was in the second tier of women’s football for Charlton Athletic Women. She only made 5 appearances in her first year in Sweden, before breaking out last year as her team marched to the title by an 11 point margin, dropping points just once all season and conceding only 9 goals in 26 games. Cumings will be hoping to force her way into City’s starting XI, although she may have her work cut out for her unless one of Keating or Yamashita leaves.
Conclusion
Cumings is a solid, if slightly confusing signing. But Therese Sjögran has shown in her opening few months at City that she is not afraid to make a statement, as she did with sacking Gareth Taylor ahead of a quadruple header against Chelsea Women earlier in the year. If Cumings is a part of Sjögran’s vision for the club, you would assume that it will not be long before she is a mainstay in City’s team.
