Leicester City’s new boss, Marti Cifuentes, has set an ambitious tone for his tenure, emphasizing a swift return to the Premier League. In an exclusive interview with LeicestershireLive, the Spaniard shared his vision, blending immediate objectives with a commitment to establishing a distinctive playing style and nurturing young talent.
Promotion Target
Cifuentes was clear about the club’s primary goal: “The main target is to go back as soon as possible to the Premier League. That’s the kind of ambition that a club like Leicester should have.” However, Cifuentes is not solely focused on short-term success. He stressed the importance of promotion with strength and stability, saying, “It’s not just about getting there as soon as possible, but getting there and being as strong as we can.”

The Championship’s competitiveness presents a formidable challenge, as Cifuentes acknowledged: “It’s been challenging for teams that actually have been extremely dominant, as with Leicester two seasons ago, in a league like the Championship that is a tough one to get 97 points.” His task, he explained, is to strike a balance between securing immediate results and laying the groundwork for a lasting identity. “My job as a manager is to find the balance to how we get the short-term results while we build the long-term identity and long-term results if possible,” he said.
Central to Cifuentes’ philosophy is the development of a clear playing style. He envisions Leicester as “an attacking team that scores the goals, that is dominant through the games, that tries to win the ball back as soon as possible, that has structure and a clear way to play but can adapt.”
Beyond the first team, Cifuentes is committed to fostering the club’s future through its academy. “The second part of it is how we can help the academy, to help the young players, to build this identity that sustains the club in the future,” he said.
