Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Alfie Devine could be the next young talent to make the switch from North to South London, with Championship side Millwall expressing serious interest in the England youth international.

South London Calling?

According to Mirror reporter Daniel Marsh, the Lions are tracking the 20-year-old playmaker as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of a renewed push for promotion. Having narrowly missed out on a playoff place last season, Alex Neil’s side could see Devine as a potential difference-maker.

Millwall are also closing in on a deal to sign former Spurs midfielder Massimo Luongo from Ipswich Town, and the double addition of Luongo and Devine would significantly enhance the depth and dynamism of their midfield.

Should a deal materialise, Devine would follow the path of fellow Spurs academy graduate Japhet Tanganga, who joined Millwall in July 2024 and has since flourished at The Den.

From Liverpool to London

Devine began his youth career at Liverpool before being released at age 11, later joining Wigan Athletic where he quickly rose through the academy ranks. He debuted for their U23s aged just 15 and caught the eye during Wigan’s FA Youth Cup run. His talent prompted Tottenham to secure his signature for a reported £300,000 in July 2020, just weeks after Wigan entered administration.

Devine made an instant impact at Tottenham, becoming the club’s youngest ever first-team player at just 16 years and 163 days, and marking his debut with a goal in an FA Cup win over Marine. The talented midfielder earned praise from both José Mourinho and Antonio Conte, though his progress was disrupted by injury during the 2021–22 season, as he was limited to a single Spurs appearance — another FA Cup outing, this time against Portsmouth.

Loan Spells and Development

His most impactful spell came at Port Vale in League One during the 2023–24 campaign, where he made 26 appearances, scoring three goals and registering three assists. Devine impressed in both attacking and deeper roles, earning individual awards for his EFL Cup heroics and rave reviews from Vale staff.

A Championship loan to Plymouth Argyle followed in January 2024, where he featured 15 times in the second half of the season. He then spent the 2024–25 campaign on loan in Belgium with Westerlo, notching six goals across 32 appearances despite a hamstring injury in February.

England Pedigree

Internationally, Devine has been a fixture in the England youth setup. He starred in the U19 European Championship-winning squad in 2022 and also featured in the 2023 U-20 World Cup, scoring in both the group stage and round of 16. In September 2023, he earned a call-up to train with Gareth Southgate’s senior squad, highlighting his reputation within the national setup.

Will Frank Let Him Leave?

One potential obstacle in Millwall’s pursuit is Tottenham’s new head coach, Thomas Frank. The Dane handed Devine a starting role in last weekend’s friendly win over Reading, indicating the 20-year-old could still feature in Spurs’ first-team plans. Whether his long-term future lies at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, The Den, or indeed elsewhere, remains uncertain — but securing the England youth international, whether on loan or in a permanent deal, would represent a strong statement of intent from the Lions.
