What a difference a couple of months makes.

It feels like only yesterday that Morgan Gibbs-White secured a Nottingham Forest win over West Ham, leaving the Hammers eight points from safety with a resigned feeling of relegation.

Eight weeks later, under the Saturday night lights, Nuno's troops held title-challenging Manchester City to a battling 0-0 draw to temporarily move out of the bottom three for the first time since late November.

Bodies on the line

The most recent revival spark was not aided by flair or skill. This was a team performance full of belief and spirit, commitment to survive and a new sense of unity around the London Stadium.

Manchester City's title hopes appeared to fizzle out in East London. Erling Haaland snatched at chances, Bernardo Silva teased and tapped the ball around the edge of the box, all leading to very little in terms of clear chances.

Konstantinos Mavropanos, Jean-Clair Todibo and Axel Disasi put in a defensive performance as though their lives depended on a clean sheet. Mateus Fernandes and Tomas Soucek hounded the array of black shirts in the midfield, while Mads Hermansen in goal put in his best performance since his summer arrival from Leicester City.

It's easy to forget West Ham are still embroiled in a relegation battle. A glance at the table reminds us that Nuno Espirito's side are still right in the thick of it. However, the momentum has peaked just at the right time. Last night was the definition of a group of players refusing to play Championship football next season.

Speaking to whufc.com, the boss described his side as 'heroic'. "Everybody had to realise the need of a big effort without the ball, off the ball.

We had to work very hard and the boys did well, really well. The first half was tough because we didn't have much of the ball but at the same time, we controlled, we closed the gaps, we closed the lines, City didn't break us too many times."

Positive reaction

Mavropanos's header minutes after Silva's chipped opener was a perfect response, given the number of times we often see heads dropped when West Ham fall behind at home.

"It was positive, the way we reacted to the goal, that we could see immediately we went forward, we achieved a corner and a goal, which against teams like this is important. You cannot put your heads down

And again, I think the fans understand it and they suffer alongside us, knowing that the game is hard for us, the quality of the opponent in the end, putting the bodies on the line.

So, it was a big team effort."

Crucial week ahead

The Hammers head to Villa Park next weekend before the international break, on the same day that relegation rivals Tottenham and Nottingham Forest meet in a crucial relegation battle.

However, as echoed by both Nuno and captain Jarrod Bowen in recent weeks, the sides at the bottom can only take care of their own results. "We are realising that nothing has changed, our fans know it, we know it, we have to work very hard, very hard, very hard.

We don't look at the table, we try to ignore it and stay humble, recognise that it's a long, long way to go."

Alongside the ongoing board protests, the positivity among fans also gives the players an extra incentive to play at home. The defeat to Nottingham Forest at the start of January was the last time the Hammers lost at home, now six game unbeaten in all competitions, including against both Manchester clubs.

"The support was huge, it was huge." Nuno continued.

"We have to understand how hard it is to play against City. I think they recognise the effort of the boys, the belief of the boys and in the final moments what was needed and they give the support and the sound.

When we go out, we try and all keep going. But it's an extra man, it's an extra man in these situations and we cannot thank them enough."
