Hinds Homecoming

In a significant boost to their squad, Arsenal Women have officially confirmed the signing of Jamaican international Taylor Hinds on a free transfer, marking a heartfelt return to the club where she began her career. The 26-year-old defender, who came through Arsenal’s academy, has signed a reported three-year deal and will don the number 24 shirt for the Gunners as they prepare for the 2025/26 Women’s Super League (WSL) season and their UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign.

Hinds’ journey back to North London is a story of perseverance, growth, and ambition. Having joined Arsenal’s academy at the age of 11 in 2010, she made her senior debut for the club during the 2017/18 FA WSL Cup campaign, showcasing her potential as a versatile and dynamic player. However, seeking regular playing time, Hinds left Arsenal in 2018 to join Everton, before moving to Liverpool in 2020, where she spent five impactful seasons.

Career so far
At Liverpool, Hinds established herself as a cornerstone of the team, making 131 appearances across all competitions and scoring eight goals. Her contributions were instrumental in Liverpool’s promotion to the WSL in the 2021/22 season, where she played every league game, helping the Reds clinch the FA Women’s Championship title. Hinds’ leadership qualities shone through as she took on the role of vice-captain in 2023, and her performances last season—averaging 3.7 clearances, four ball recoveries, and three tackles per game—cemented her reputation as one of the WSL’s most reliable defenders.

Welcome to Arsenal
The versatile full-back, who can operate on either flank or even in midfield, brings a wealth of experience and flexibility to an Arsenal side aiming to compete on multiple fronts. Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers expressed her enthusiasm about the signing, stating, “We’re delighted to welcome Taylor back to Arsenal. She’s a versatile player who has great experience from multiple seasons in the WSL with Liverpool, where she took on a leadership role. I’m excited to get started with Taylor on the training pitch.”

Director of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley echoed Slegers’ sentiments, highlighting Hinds’ quality and connection to the club. “Everybody at Arsenal is thrilled to welcome Taylor back to the club where she spent several years at the start of her career. She is a player with great quality and vast experience of top-level football, and will be an excellent addition to our group as we aim to compete on multiple fronts next season,” Wheatley said.

Hinds herself expressed immense pride in returning to her roots, emphasizing Arsenal’s winning mentality as a key factor in her decision. “I’m so proud to have signed for Arsenal,” she said. “I want to push, compete, and be winning trophies – and this club encompasses all of that both on and off the pitch. You can see what direction Arsenal is going in, and everyone at the club wants to win.” The opportunity to play Champions League football with the reigning European champions was reportedly a major draw for Hinds, who turned down a contract extension with Liverpool to make the move.

International career
Hinds’ international career adds another layer to her value. Having represented England at the U17 and U20 World Cups, she switched allegiances to Jamaica in 2024, earning her first senior cap against France in October. Her international experience and defensive prowess will bolster Arsenal’s backline, providing cover and competition for established full-backs like Katie McCabe and Emily Fox. Her arrival may also signal a potential departure for Austrian defender Laura Wienroither, who recently returned from a loan spell at Manchester City.

An old friend
The signing of Hinds follows Arsenal’s acquisition of England international Chloe Kelly, another former academy product, signalling a clear intent to blend homegrown talent with proven WSL experience. With the Gunners set to play all 11 of their WSL home matches at the Emirates Stadium next season, Hinds’ return adds depth and leadership to a squad determined to challenge for the league title and defend their Champions League crown.

As Hinds steps back onto the Arsenal training pitch, her homecoming represents not just a return to familiar ground but a chance to fulfil her ambitions at one of the world’s biggest clubs. Arsenal fans will be eager to see the versatile defender in action, bringing her tenacity, experience, and winning mentality to a team poised for success.
