Wales secured a memorable 2-1 victory over Norway at the Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday, coming from behind to claim their first-ever win in Nations League A.

Oscar Bobb gave Norway an early lead after being picked out by Martin Ødegaard, but Wales responded with real purpose. Daniel James levelled before half-time after an excellent delivery from Sorba Thomas, before Neco Williams completed the turnaround with a powerful low-driven free-kick shortly after the restart.

It was a result built on attacking intent, defensive resilience and a far stronger response from Craig Bellamy’s side following the disappointment of defeat in Denmark. Norway’s red card early in the second half changed the match, but Wales had already begun to take control and deserved their route back into the contest.

Bobb Gives Norway an Early Lead

Wales went into the evening still waiting for both their first goal and first point of the Nations League campaign, so conceding inside 11 minutes was an unwelcome start.

Martin Ødegaard found space to slide a precise through ball into Bobb’s path, and the Norway forward kept his composure when faced with Danny Ward. It was a sharp reminder of the quality Wales were up against, with Erling Haaland, Ødegaard and Bobb all capable of punishing even the smallest lapse.

The goal could have unsettled Wales, particularly after the previous performance against Denmark, but the home side refused to retreat. Bellamy’s five changes gave the team fresh energy, and Wales gradually began to make the contest more open through their wide men.

Thomas and James Find Their Rhythm

Sorba Thomas was the key outlet as Wales worked their way back into the game. Norway lost Julian Ryerson to injury early on, and Thomas repeatedly asked difficult questions of his replacement, carrying the ball forward and delivering with real quality from the left.

Lewis Koumas and Daniel James provided the running around him, while Liam Cullen’s movement gave Wales a focal point in and around the penalty area. Cullen forced Ørjan Nyland into a close-range save, and Ethan Ampadu fired over as the pressure built, although there was still a warning at the other end when a cross deflected off Ben Cabango and into Ward’s arms.

Wales eventually found the equaliser their attacking play warranted in the 38th minute. Thomas produced another dangerous ball into the area, and James arrived to slide home at the back post, rewarding a performance in which his pace had constantly threatened to expose Norway’s back line.

A Fast Start to the Second Half

The defining moment arrived only seconds after the restart. James was alert to a loose pass on the edge of the Norway area and looked set to break through on goal before Torbjørn Heggem failed to deal with the threat and pulled him back.

The defender was shown a straight red card, leaving Norway with ten men and giving Wales a free-kick in a dangerous position. Liam Cullen dummied the run over the ball, and Neco Williams struck a powerful low shot beyond Nyland into the bottom left corner to complete the comeback in the 48th minute.

It was a moment that reflected the authority Wales had begun to show. Williams was composed in possession and decisive when the opportunity came, while James had once again made the difference through his willingness to press and run beyond the Norwegian defence.

Wales Cannot Find a Third

With the extra man, Wales had opportunities to put the game beyond doubt. Thomas and James combined again for a chance which Nyland did well to keep out, before Thomas went close himself from the edge of the box.

Cullen and substitute Josh Sheehan also tested the Norwegian goalkeeper, while Bellamy used his bench to maintain the energy in the side. Joel Colwill, Brennan Johnson and Mark Harris were introduced as Wales looked to stretch Norway further, but a third goal never arrived.

That kept the final stages tighter than Wales would have liked. The home side had played some of their best football after going behind, but their inability to take another opportunity ensured there was still work to do defensively.

Haaland Kept Quiet

Norway remained dangerous despite their numerical disadvantage, and Wales had to stay disciplined. Erling Haaland was largely contained, with Ben Davies putting him under pressure when he headed over from close range midway through the second half.

The Manchester City striker had another chance later on but headed straight at Ward, while substitute Jørgen Strand Larsen curled narrowly wide as Norway pushed for a late equaliser. Wales had to absorb pressure, block shots and manage the game more carefully than they had during their dominant spell after the red card.

Ampadu offered control in midfield, Cabango dealt with a demanding evening against elite attacking opponents, and Davies’ experience was valuable when Norway began to test Wales with more direct play. It was not a flawless defensive display, but it was a determined one.

A Statement Win for Wales

The result gives Wales their first Nations League A victory and provides a timely response after a difficult opening to the campaign.

Dan James and Sorba Thomas were the driving forces in the first-half recovery, Neco Williams delivered the decisive moment, and Bellamy’s side showed huge character to recover from an early setback against a Norway team containing elite attacking talent with players such as Haaland, Antonio Nusa, Ødegaard and co at their disposal.

There were moments when Wales could have made the scoreline more comfortable, and the late pressure ensured the win had to be earned. But after a testing run of results, this was a performance full of belief and one which gave the Red Wall a night to remember.
