Arsenal made the trip to one of the Premier League's toughest away venues and came home with all three points, edging past Aston Villa 1-0 thanks to a second-half strike from Bukayo Saka. It's back-to-back wins and back-to-back clean sheets to start the title defence for Mikel Arteta's side.
Aston Villa came out with far more bite than they showed in their opening-day loss to Brighton, defending in numbers and threatening on the break. The hosts had the game's best chance of the opening 45 minutes when Emiliano Buendía rattled the crossbar. At the other end, debutant goalkeeper Zion Suzuki settled in quickly with a handful of assured saves to keep things level.
Arsenal held plenty of the ball but couldn't find a way to convert territory into real chances, patiently probing without cracking Villa's shape. The two sides went in level at the break.
The deadlock broke in the 59th minute. Arsenal worked a move down the left flank, Riccardo Calafiori whipped in a cross, and Bukayo Saka arrived at the back post to finish from close range. It's Saka's second goal in as many league matches — further proof that he remains Arsenal's go-to man when a moment of quality is needed.
From there, our game management took center stage. Villa pushed hard for an equalizer, but our back line — with Declan Rice pulling the strings in midfield — never let the hosts settle into any sustained pressure. Remarkably, Villa didn't manage a single shot on target across the full 90 minutes.
Arteta turned to his bench to help see out the win, bringing on the likes of Eberechi Eze, Bruno Guimarães, and Martin Zubimendi to reinforce control in the closing stages.
It wasn't a flashy performance, and it didn't need to be. Two matches into the season, we have already shown two different faces — the free-flowing attacking win in our opener, and now the disciplined, low-event victory required to leave a difficult away ground with a result.
Two games, two wins, two clean sheets. If we are serious about defending our title, learning to win ugly at places like Villa Park could prove just as valuable as our moments of attacking brilliance come the business end of the season.
