Sunderland’s return to the Premier League has started with promise, but seasoned manager Sean Dyche has urged caution, reminding fans and pundits alike that survival in the top flight is “a marathon, not a sprint.” The Black Cats have taken six points from their opening three matches, climbing to sixth in the table ahead of the international break — but Dyche believes the real test is yet to come.
🏁 A Strong Start, But Long Road Ahead
Speaking on talkSPORT, Dyche acknowledged Sunderland’s impressive early form, which includes home wins over West Ham and Brentford — marking only the second time in their Premier League history that they’ve won their first two home fixtures.
“Sunderland have had a great start, but having a great start and doing the whole season is a different thing,” Dyche said. “The money side is the first thing, but it’s getting the team to understand the Premier League and gel. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.”
His comments reflect the broader challenge facing newly promoted sides. In the past two seasons, all six clubs promoted to the Premier League were relegated at the first time of asking — a trend Sunderland are determined to break.

Dyche’s remarks were echoed by Alan Shearer, who emphasized the importance of home form for survival. Speaking after Sunderland’s 2–0 defeat at Burnley, Shearer pointed to the passionate fanbases at Sunderland and Leeds as potential game-changers.
“It’s no surprise that all three of them have won at home — Sunderland, Leeds, and Burnley,” Shearer said. “That’s going to be key, isn’t it? Particularly at Sunderland and Elland Road, because of how crazy those fans are.”
Shearer added that survival will hinge on picking up points at home and grinding out results away against mid-table rivals.

🔮 What Lies Ahead
Under Régis Le Bris, Sunderland have shown tactical discipline and attacking flair, with new signings like Granit Xhaka already making an impact. But as Dyche warned, early momentum must be sustained across a grueling campaign.
With Crystal Palace up next, Sunderland will look to build on their strong start and continue proving that they belong in the top flight. The road to survival may be long, but the Black Cats have shown they’re ready to fight — and their fans will be right there with them.
