Sheffield Wednesday are believed to have taken a closer look at young Ivorian midfielder Mohamed Konate as they assess potential additions to their squad this summer. Sheffield Star claim he is a player the club are considering.
The 20-year-old, who is a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Portuguese side SC Covilhã, is understood to have spent some time training with the Owls during their recent stay at St. George’s Park as part of their pre-season preparations.
Free Agent Looking for New Challenge
Konate, who has been attracting attention after his stint in Portugal, is thought to be on the club’s radar as they look to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the new campaign. However, as things stand, there has been no official word from Wednesday on whether the player’s time with the squad will lead to a permanent deal.

Transfer Fee Ban
Sheffield Wednesday are dealing with a three-window transfer fee restriction by the English Football League (EFL), lasting until January 2027, due to repeated late payment of player wages, exceeding 30 days of defaults between July 2024 and June 2025. The club is also under a registration embargo, limiting them to a 23-player squad and prohibiting signings involving fees until outstanding wages are paid. The EFL has charged both the club and owner Dejphon Chansiri for breaches related to non-payment in March and May 2025. Sheffield Wednesday are appealing the decision, but the ongoing financial issues have raised concerns about player and staff retention
