Southampton are reportedly making a surprise move for 26-year-old winger Morlaye Sylla, as they look to strengthen their attacking options ahead of a crucial Championship season.
The Guinea international is currently a free agent after his stint in Portugal’s Primeira Liga and has emerged as a left-field option for the Saints, who are keen to add more depth and versatility to their front line.

Saints Want More Firepower on the Left
After Moussa Djenepo’s quiet exit and a string of underwhelming signings on the left wing, Southampton are still searching for a reliable attacking threat out wide. Sadio Mané remains the last true success story in that position, with the likes of Kamaldeen Sulemana, Mislav Oršić, and Maxwel Cornet failing to make a lasting impact.
Samuel Edozie has shown flashes of promise during pre-season, but the club are reportedly looking for more competition in the position, both as cover and as a way to push players to maintain consistent form. Sylla could provide just that.
Who Is Morlaye Sylla?
Sylla first made a name for himself in Europe at FC Arouca, where his vision, passing range, and positional intelligence earned him praise in the Portuguese top flight. While not a prolific goal scorer, his tactical versatility and ability to operate across attacking roles make him a useful asset in tight matches.
Last season, Sylla recorded two goals in 32 appearances. Though the numbers aren’t eye-popping, his performances still attracted interest across Europe, with clubs recognising the impact he can have that doesn’t always show up on the stat sheet.
Southampton Make Their Move
According to Africa Foot, Southampton have already made an initial offer to sign Sylla. A source close to negotiations confirmed that a counteroffer has been made and the two sides are now awaiting a resolution.
The Saints’ proposal is believed to be worth more than £250,000, but it's the club’s overall sporting project and their Premier League promotion ambitions that appear to be the main draw for Sylla. Another unnamed Championship club is also reportedly in the race, but Southampton are currently in pole position.
A Signing With Smart Upside
While Sylla wouldn’t arrive as a marquee signing, he represents the kind of calculated, low-risk move that could quietly strengthen the squad. His experience in a competitive European league, combined with his hunger to prove himself in England, could make him a valuable rotation option for Russell Martin.
In a long and physically demanding Championship season, depth and internal competition are key — and Sylla could be exactly the kind of player who helps tip the balance in tight games.
Southampton’s squad rebuild continues to gather pace, and if this deal goes through, it may prove to be one of their smartest under-the-radar moves of the summer.
