Toffees Sign Germany U21 Midfielder

Everton have completed the signing of Merlin Röhl from SC Freiburg on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy the Germany Under-21 international for £17.3 million in 2026.

The 23-year-old central midfielder, known for his high energy, athleticism, and versatility, becomes David Moyes’ ninth signing of a busy summer window as the Toffees continue their squad rebuild.

Röhl, who has been on the radar of several European clubs, expressed his excitement after sealing the move to Goodison Park.

“I'm really excited and full of joy to sign for Everton,” Röhl told the club’s official website.
“It's a big club, with great history and great fans.
It's the right time for me to join Everton. It feels like a shifting point for the club. The future looks really good and I'm excited to be part of it.”

Röhl added that Everton's recent developments — including the arrival of Moyes, new signings, and the forthcoming move to Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium — were all factors in his decision.

“I've watched the evolution of the club closely. With the manager and stadium, there are a lot of positives.”

Moyes Continues Midfield Overhaul

Manager David Moyes, who returned to the Everton dugout earlier this summer, welcomed the addition of Röhl as part of his ongoing efforts to reshape the team.

“We're really pleased to bring Merlin to Everton,” said Moyes.
“He will add different qualities to our existing midfield options — he's energetic, composed on the ball, and has a strong work ethic that fits how we want to play.”

The arrival of Röhl gives Moyes more tactical flexibility in the centre of the park, complementing existing options as the club prepares for a competitive Premier League season.

Who Is Merlin Röhl?

Röhl began his professional career with Ingolstadt, before joining Freiburg in 2022, where he developed into one of Germany’s most promising young midfielders. His performances for the Germany U21 national team have further highlighted his potential on the European stage.

At 6'3", Röhl offers physical presence alongside his technical skill and box-to-box capabilities. His ability to play in a variety of midfield roles — from deep-lying playmaker to attacking support — makes him an appealing long-term investment for the Merseyside club.
