Xabi Alonso faces doubts ahead of La Liga opener
Xabi Alonso is considering alternatives in the starting lineup for tomorrow's league debut at the Santiago Bernabéu

Real Madrid begins its La Liga season tomorrow, Tuesday, hosting Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabéu at 9:00 PM. The match marks the official start of Xabi Alonso’s era with Los Blancos.

The Basque coach used the recent Club World Cup to get to know his players and spoke of “certainties” after their semifinal loss to PSG. These have been further refined through training sessions at Valdebebas, a test against Leganés, and a friendly against WSG Tirol.

Midfield Decisions: Valverde Set to Return

One of the major unknowns for Alonso is the starting eleven. However, it is expected to be similar to the lineup used against WSG Tirol, according to Mundo Deportivo. Federico Valverde, who missed that match with a muscle strain, has now recovered and is expected to start.

He will likely play alongside Arda Güler and Aurélien Tchouaméni, pushing Dani Ceballos to the bench.

Vinicius and Mbappé Attack Certain, But Who Joins?

Up front, Vinicius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé are guaranteed starters. The final attacking spot remains open. Brahim Díaz, who started against WSG Tirol, is the frontrunner to complete the trio if Alonso goes with a 4-3-3.

Rodrygo remains in contention despite uncertainty over his future, while 18-year-old wonderkid Franco Mastantuono. who trained with the team for the first time on Friday could make his Bernabéu debut, though not from the start.

Defense: Trent or Carvajal?

At right back, Alonso faces another decision. Dani Carvajal has returned from a long-term injury, but new signing Trent Alexander-Arnold impressed in Innsbruck and is likely to start against Osasuna.

Injury Concerns Pile Up

Madrid will be without four key players due to injury: Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, Endrick, and Ferland Mendy. Of these, Camavinga is closest to a return, expected after the September international break.

Rüdiger Suspension Continues

Antonio Rüdiger is also unavailable, serving the last of a six-game ban imposed after last year’s Copa del Rey final. The German defender was punished for throwing an object at the referee and displaying aggressive behavior, as reported in the match record.

He has already served five matches of the suspension, with Osasuna being the final one.
