As we take time out from the Premier league for another week or so for the International break, we take this opportunity to have a look at how Arsenal's season has gone so far. Seven matches played in the league and five wins and a draw from those seven matches leaves the Gunners in a very favourable position at the top of the table on 16 points. Goal difference for the matches played reads extremely well for Mikel Arteta's team also and with 14 goals scored for and 3 against, this is a league best for this statistic and two ahead of next best, Manchester City.

Goals conceded

Arsenal's consistency this season can be attributed to the balance that Arteta now has across the squad, his new signings bedding in quite nicely at the club with cover provided in all key areas. Another factor of this consistency is how solid the preferred backline of Gabriel, Saliba, Timber and Calafiori are, their contribution is not limited to defensive ones either with Saliba the only one from the quartet yet to find the opposition net this season.

Factor in the addition of Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié along with Ben White and Myles Lewis-Skelley and you see a formidable pattern. Undeniably then, the importance of the Arsenal defence to the team is immense and this is underpinned by their measly goals against column, three goals conceded across their opening ten matches in all competitions is the least that any Arsenal side have conceded in their 138 year history at this point of the season.

For context, the next best that the Gunners have been ten games into a season was four goals conceded in the 2007/2008 campaign under Arsene Wenger. Another key aspect of the successful start to the season is that Arsenal have kept seven clean sheets in their opening 10 games in all competitions, a feat which matches the start from the team of 1987/1988, 37 years ago!.. A good omen if any and surely the foundation of any future success.

The wins...

Arsenal's defensive strength has seen the team concede just twice from open play this season with the third being the August 'Goal of the month' winner, Dominik Szoboszlai's free kick for Liverpool.

It is worth noting then the importance of these clean sheets and how they have been instrumental in propelling the gunners to five wins in the current premier league campaign. The wins came against against Manchester United (0-1), Leeds United (5-0), Nottingham Forest (3-0), Newcastle United (1-2) and West Ham United (2-0).

To further demonstrate the versatility of the team this season, Mikel Arteta's men have produced nine different scorers across these games, Calafiori (1), Timber (2), Gyokores (3), Zubimendi (2), Martinelli (1), Gabriel (1), Merino (1), Saka (2) and Rice (1). Therefore, with the goals coming from defence, midfield and the forward line, Arsenal have become much more of a solid opponent who can hurt teams from all over the pitch. The set pieces alone have become a work of art for the Gunners, with approx 25% of our goals this season coming from dead ball situations.

What next for the Gunners?

Up next for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal is a trip across London on Saturday 18th October to face Fulham in a 5.30pm kick off. Manager Marco Silva will hope to continue with his side's home form this season which has seen the Cottagers win two and draw one of their three home games in the league this far.

On the other hand, Arsenal's record at Craven Cottage in the past five seasons reads well for the in form Gunners with three wins and a draw although this fixture will be anything but a formality. Expect the back line to be properly tested on this outing with chances at a minimum on each end, although on current form, and on this occasion, Arsenal should have too much in the tank for Fulham in this London derby.

Three days later, on the 21st October, it's Champions League time again and the visitors to the Emirates are Spanish giants, Atletico Madrid managed by Diego Simeone. Simeone has been the manager of Atletico Madrid since December 2011 and as of October 2025, has been at the club for almost 14 years, making him one of the longest-serving managers in football.

Their results this season in the competition are one loss (Liverpool 3-2) and one win (Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1), and this will be only the third time that the clubs have met in recent times and for the first time in the Champions League. Athletico came out top in the head to head in the Europa League semi final in 2018, securing a 1-1 draw at the Emirates and a 1-0 win at home.

From an Arsenal perspective, Mikel Arteta will be looking to continue with his sides 100% record in this years competition, they started the competition with 2-0 wins against both Athletic Club and Olympiacos and this leaves the Gunners on six points and in 5th place on goal difference overall.
