Mansfield Town produced a clinical first-half demolition to defeat already-promoted Cardiff City 5-4 in a nine-goal thriller at Field Mill, securing 10th place in League One - their highest finish for 39 years.
Ryan Sweeney’s early header and Lucas Akins’ rapid double gave the Stags a 3-0 lead inside 26 minutes, with Oliver Irow’s and Rhys Oates ensuring that Nigel Clough’s men took the spoils. Cardiff fought back through Isaak Davies, Omari Kellyman’s brace and Ronan Kpakio’s strike – but ultimately a lethal first half from the Stags ensured that the Bluebirds left the One Call Stadium empty-handed.
Stags’ blistering start stuns Bluebirds
Mansfield came flying out of the blocks at Field Mill. Ryan Sweeney rose highest to power home Nathan Moriah-Welsh’s cross after just 2 minutes, slightly subduing the travelling Bluebirds support who arrived in party-mode.
The Stags doubled their advantage on 23 minutes when Lucas Akins latched onto Louis Reed’s halfway-line pass, racing clear of the high Cardiff line before coolly slotting past debutant Harry Tyrer.
Three minutes later, Akins struck again. Dylan Lawlor blocked his initial effort but the veteran reacted first to rifle home the rebound - Cardiff shell-shocked at 3-0 inside half an hour.
Tyrer was called into meaningful action when Jon Russell forced a point-blank save, while Ollie Tanner struck the bar twice as Cardiff showed attacking threat without the clinical edge required against Mansfield’s ferocious pressing game.

Davies sparks Cardiff into Life
Brian Barry-Murphy’s half-time team-talk ignited a response. On 61 minutes, Isaak Davies drilled home from 18 yards after good work from Tanner on the right flank, reducing the deficit and reigniting hopes of an unlikely recovery.
Nigel Clough’s side refused to panic. Louis Reed’s deep pass caught Cardiff out on the break and released Rhys Oates who dinked Tyrer beautifully in the 63rd minute, restoring Mansfield’s lead at 4-1.
The momentum shifted again three minutes later. Liam Roberts’ nightmare moment saw a tame Omari Kellyman shot trickle through his legs, after a smart backheel pass from Rubin Colwill – 4-2.
Mansfield Reclaim Control
The killer blow arrived on 79 minutes. Oliver Irow cut in from the left – with just his second touch of the game – before steering a low finish past Tyrer. A clinical counter-punch, which restored the Stags' supremacy at 5-2.
Kpakio tapped in Ollie Tanner's deflected effort off the bar in the 86th minute to add to the proceedings, with Omari Kellyman completing his brace in the 93rd minute to finish his loan spell with the Bluebirds on 13G/A for the season. It all proved too little, too late for Barry-Murphy's side.

What’s Next?
Now the season has drawn to a successful conclusion for the Bluebirds, pre-season planning will start to begin. A pre-season tour of Barry-Murphy's home town of Cork will provide him with plenty of opportunity to assess his squad, heading into the Championship – not to mention any expected incomings.
I imagine Barry-Murphy and the scouting team will be targeting up to 4 new signings, perhaps more depending on whether Cardiff finally manage to secure POTS Ryan Wintle, Joel Bagan and Perry Ng to new deals, respectively.
Due to the impending departure of Omari Kellyman, it would make sense to also target a technical and vesatile number 10 who is capable of also deputising in wide areas – if Chelsea or Cardiff can not agree on a deal for Omari to return.
Additionally, the Bluebirds now hold a priority £1.5M buy option on Nathan Trott, following their promotion back to the second tier – although there are varying reports of whether this will come to fruition or not.
