Cardiff City produced a devastating attacking display at the Cardiff City Stadium, demolishing Northampton Town 5-1 in their final home League One fixture and capping a remarkable end to the campaign with a performance that signalled their readiness for Championship football.
Ollie Tanner, Joel Colwill and Callum Robinson gave the Bluebirds a commanding 3-0 lead heading into the break, with Yousef Salech and another Tanner goal adding further gloss after the interval despite a late Jake Evans consolation for the visitors.
Explosive Opening
Brian Barry-Murphy made five changes to the side that defeated Port Vale, with Will Fish, Joel Bagan, Chris Willock, Ollie Tanner and debutant Harry Tyrer all starting. The alterations paid immediate dividends.
Despite Northampton carving out early chances - Cameron McGeehan testing Tyrer from distance and Jon Guthrie’s header requiring a smart save - Cardiff soon asserted total superiority. On nine minutes, Willock’s excellent work on the left culminated in a terrific cross that Tanner met with a powerful strike into the net.
The Bluebirds’ pressure continued relentlessly, and the second arrived soon after.
Bagan’s low ball found Rubin Colwill, whose first-time pass released his brother Joel to convert from close range - the siblings combining to send the home crowd into celebration.

Robinson Makes It Three
Cardiff’s dominance was absolute. A poor back pass from Jack Vale gifted Robinson a one-on-one opportunity three minutes before half-time, which the Irish international converted with composure to put the Bluebirds three goals clear.
David Turnbull nearly made it four just before the interval, his edge-of-the-box effort brilliantly saved by Lee Burge. Cardiff’s first-half superiority was total - 15 shots to Northampton’s 5, and utter statistical dominance in nearly every other metric.

Tanner’s Second
Whatever Northampton said at half-time made no difference. Tanner claimed his second and Cardiff’s fourth at the 54th minute, rifling home after Willock’s pass across the face of goal - the winger’s movement and finishing earning him Man of the Match honours.
Northampton pulled one back in the 68th minute through substitute Jake Evans’ curling strike into the bottom left corner, briefly interrupting Cardiff’s rhythm. Yet Barry-Murphy’s players responded with maturity, maintaining possession and threatening further goals.

Salech Seals It
Salech put the seal on the rout in the 86th minute, converting Robinson’s pass across goal for his 15th league goal of the season. Robinson nearly added a sixth moments later, his effort flying just wide.
Tyrer, on debut, produced important saves early and claimed crosses confidently throughout, while the back four of Fish, Lawlor, Bagan and Kpakio remained largely untroubled after the opening exchanges.

Perfect Championship Preparation
This emphatic victory moves Cardiff to 91 points from 45 matches - 16 clear of third-placed Bolton with one game remaining. The title belongs to Lincoln City, but second place is Cardiff’s to celebrate.
Northampton now sit bottom of the pile on 44 points, with relegation confirmed and any remaining pride erased after one of the division’s heaviest defeats this season.

What’s Next?
Cardiff conclude their League One campaign with a final-day trip to Mansfield Town next Saturday. Already promoted and assured of second, Barry-Murphy can experiment with lineups and manage fitness while plotting the Championship challenges ahead.
The real story now becomes preparation for life among the Championship elite, but if this five-goal demolition is the parting gift to League One, Cardiff exit the division in style.
I'd also like to add my own condolences towards Dai Hunt, who has recently passed away. A true Bluebird through thick and thin! Rest in peace.
