Chelsea Eye Up Move for Crystal Palace Star Skipper

Marc Guehi, who came through Chelsea’s youth academy before departing for Crystal Palace in 2021, has emerged as a prime target for the Blues as they look to strengthen their defence under manager Enzo Maresca. With Guehi’s contract nearing its final year and interest from multiple Premier League clubs, Chelsea’s pursuit could signal a masterplan to bring back a familiar face to Stamford Bridge.

A Homecoming with Purpose

Marc Guehi’s journey with Chelsea began at the age of eight when he joined the club’s esteemed Cobham academy. Progressing through the ranks, he captained the youth teams to unprecedented success, including a treble-winning campaign with the under-18s in 2017. Despite his promise, Guehi struggled to break into Chelsea’s senior squad, making just two first-team appearances in the EFL Cup in 2019. A successful loan spell at Swansea City in the Championship showcased his potential, but with a crowded defensive lineup at Chelsea under then-manager Thomas Tuchel, Guehi sought regular playing time elsewhere.

The Competition and Challenges

Chelsea face stiff competition in their pursuit of Guehi. Liverpool, Tottenham, Newcastle, and Arsenal have all registered interest in the defender, with Liverpool reportedly being Guehi’s preferred destination. Newcastle, who had multiple bids rejected last summer, remain in the race, while Tottenham’s £65 million offer in January was turned down by Palace.

The Strategic Fit and Potential Impact

Re-signing Guehi would be a statement of intent from Chelsea, who are aiming to compete for the Premier League title and make a mark in the Champions League. His familiarity with the club’s culture and academy graduates like Colwill and Reece James could ease his integration, while his leadership as Palace’s captain and England’s defensive lynchpin would add maturity to a young squad.

Levi Colwill suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during pre-season training on August 7, 2025, ruling him out for most of the 2025-26 Premier League season. Marc Gueh is considered prime candidate to replace Colwill, bringing Premier League experience, composure on the ball, and leadership as a potential long-term partner for Chelsea’s defence.
