Manchester United's head coach, Ruben Amorim, was left in shock as his side were dumped out of the EFL Carabao Cup by Sky Bet League Two side, Grimsby Town.

The English fourth-tier side were two goals up inside thirty minutes at Blundell Park in Lincolnshire, with Andre Onana especially not helping himself on his first start for the Red Devils this season.

All three of Amorim's attacking signings - Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko featured against Grimsby as Manchester United got better in the second half, taking the game to penalty shoot-outs, courtesy of goals from Mbeumo and Harry Maguire.

Both sides scored 10 of their 11 spot kicks to restart the shoot-out, but it was Mbeumo, who kick-started the comeback on the night, that hit the crossbar to send Grimsby Town to the next round of the EFL Cup.

Amorim's post-match conference

After the game, the former Sporting Lisbon gaffer admitted United might be in a deeper mess than they were when he joined the club last November.

"For me, it's worse than it was in the beginning. It's not about the results. I was not thinking about penalties to get to the next stage of the competition," the Portuguese told ITV Football.
"The way we played, in one moment, is so important. I think the players spoke really loudly about what they want today, and it's really clear.
"I just want to apologise to our fans , and we have a game now, and we have time to think."
"Everything was missing in the first half. We need to be proud to go to the pitch. We know that every draw in the Premier League is going to be a problem. After two games against top-tier sides, we come to a fourth division team, and we perform like that. I think the players have clearly shown what they want.
"I don't think it's the mentality, it's hard to say. I've been here for seven months, and we're talking about the environment; it's more than that.
"I'm shocked by what happened tonight because we're in a moment where we have to make a lot of changes, but when we have these moments, we need to show up," Amorim continued.

Altay Bayindir started United's first two games this season before Onana returned from an injury just in time to feature against Grimsby Town, but he was far from impressive.

Amorim was quizzed on whether the goalkeeper's decision cost his side the game, and he said;

"It's not about the goalkeeper, it's not. If you're playing against a fourth-division team, you have to block everything about the opponent.
"Again, I don't know what to say to our fans. It's hard to face everything.
"It's not about the formation. We played very well against Arsenal with the formation, and we played very well against Liverpool too.
"We got to the Europa League final with the formation in the disaster season with the system.
"The system doesn't matter. What matters is that we need to be different, and that is the job of the coach."

The 40-year-old couldn't look on when his side was involved in the penalty shootout, and he mentioned it would've been a great disservice to Grimsby if United had won with such a shambolic performance.

"The penalty shoot-out is not important. If I'm watching to see if we won on penalties, it doesn't matter.
"The beginning of the game, during the game, and to go to the next round in regular time.
"If we'd won this game on penalties, it would be so unfair to these guys [Grimsby]. Today, the football was really fair. Congratulations to them," Amorim concluded.

The former Sporting Lisbon coach has been in charge at Old Trafford for 45 games, winning 17, drawing nine, and losing 19.
