Club legend Luke O’Nien has signed a new contract with recently promoted Sunderland until 2027, the club has announced.

Although he’s not the club captain, he is a natural leader and figurehead for the team, Luke raises the level of everyone around him.

After signing from Wycombe Wanderers in 2018, O’Nien has led Sunderland from the depths of League One to the promised land of the Premier League, sharing heartbreak and triumph with the fans along the way.

O’Nien has played many roles for the club over the years, signing for the club as a defensive midfielder, before moving to full-back, and since promotion to the Championship, filling in at centre-back, making 314 senior appearances for the club along the way.

The 30 year old left a heartfelt message to the Sunderland faithful after signing his new deal:

Playing in the Premier League has been a dream since I was a kid and to be able to do it here, with this club, in front of these fans, it’s special. I want to show my gratitude by putting in performances that the Club can be proud of.
