Manchester City agree contract extension with Rúben Dias
Rúben Dias signed for Manchester City in the summer of 2020

Rúben Dias has agreed to sign a new contract with Manchester City, according to a report from David Ornstein. The deal sees the Portuguese international extend his stay at Manchester City beyond 2027, when his previous contract expired.

How Dias earned his extension

Since joining the club, Rúben Dias has been a fixture in the side. He won the Premier League in each of his first four seasons, as well as a Carabao Cup, an FA Cup and was a key figure in City’s maiden Champions League victory, which also saw them complete the treble for only the second time in English football history. Additionally, in his first season he won Premier League Player of the Season, as he lead the team to recover the title they had lost to Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool the previous year.

Why extend Dias now?

Manchester City are coming off the back of a massively destabilising campaign which saw the 4-time consecutive champions relinquish their title to Liverpool and fall to 3rd in the table. Extending Dias now is part of a push by City to secure their future for the coming years, as seen by the extensions of Erling Haaland in January and, more recently, academy graduate Nico O’Reilly. With Dias now extending his stay and fellow centre-back Joško Gvardiol still locked down until 2028, City have assured a strong centre-back partnership for at least the next three seasons.

What next for City?

City will be looking to follow this move with the extension of reigning Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, whose current deal is also set to expire in 2027. It is unclear if further extensions will follow, but with the club clearly seeking stability for what could be manager Pep Guardiola’s final few years at the club, it wouldn’t be surprising to see other key players locked down on longer term deals. Additionally, City will be looking to offload players not in Guardiola’s plans in order to trim the squad down from its current size of over 30 players.

Conclusion

It will come as a massive sigh of relief to many City fans that the club have managed to lock down such a key figure, one of the four Manchester City players hand-picked by Guardiola for the coming season’s leadership group, alongside Rodri, Erling Haaland, and full-captain Bernardo Silva. If City are to reclaim their Premier League title, Rúben Dias will surely play a key role throughout the season.
