Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola (54) is preparing for a significant clear-out of his first-team squad. With the team falling short in the Premier League title race to Liverpool and Arsenal, the Catalan coach is prioritizing a leaner, more competitive unit.
One of the biggest names likely to depart is defender John Stones (31). After making over 270 appearances for the club and serving as a key figure in City's defense for years, Stones endured an injury-riddled campaign in 2024/25, featuring in just 11 league matches. He is now on the list of expected departures.
City bet on New signing
City already signed Abdukodir Khusanov (21) from RC Lens in January. The young Uzbek international is seen as Stones’ natural successor, fitting Guardiola’s preference for a younger, more dynamic squad.
Veteran midfielder Ilkay Gündogan (34), who rejoined City from Barcelona last summer, is also being considered for a potential exit. Mateo Kovačić (31) finds himself in a similar position, with Guardiola reportedly open to letting both midfielders go.

Speaking candidly after the conclusion of the season, Guardiola expressed frustration with the club’s squad size. “I told the club I don’t want that. I don’t want to put five or six players in the stands. Then I’ll quit. If they don’t reduce the squad, I won’t stay. It’s impossible for my soul to put the players in the stands so they can’t play.”
City Gearing Up for Title Fight
With the pressure mounting after losing the title race, City is expected to act quickly in both exits and incoming transfers. Guardiola’s blueprint: a sharper, more focused group capable of reclaiming domestic and European dominance in 2025/26.
