Manchester United’s quest to rebuild their squad under manager Ruben Amorim has taken a significant step forward, with Sport TV Portugal reporting that United are targeting FC Porto’s star goalkeeper Diogo Costa. The Portuguese outlet claims that Porto are demanding a guaranteed €50 million fee, plus additional add-ons, for the 25-year-old shot-stopper, who has been on Amorim’s radar since January.
Costa, widely regarded as one of Europe’s top goalkeepers, has been a cornerstone of Porto’s success in recent years. With 197 appearances for the club and 83 clean sheets, the Portuguese international has proven his reliability and quality at both club and international level.
Ruben Amorim is reportedly eager to replace current goalkeeper Andre Onana, whose inconsistent performances and high-profile errors have raised concerns. Onana, signed for £47.3 million from Inter Milan in 2023, has struggled to live up to expectations, conceding 44 goals in the Premier League last season compared to Costa’s 27 in Liga Portugal. Costa also boasts a superior save percentage (74.1% vs. Onana’s 68.9%) and better passing accuracy, particularly in long passes (55.7% vs. Onana’s 36.6%), making him an ideal fit for Amorim’s system.
Sources indicate that Amorim held talks with Costa as early as January 2025, signaling his long-term interest in the goalkeeper, who he faced multiple times during his tenure at Sporting CP. Costa’s familiarity with Amorim’s tactics, combined with his expressed admiration for Manchester United—calling them “the biggest team in England” in an October 2024 interview—could ease negotiations. However, the €50 million base fee, potentially rising with add-ons, poses a challenge for United, who are also navigating financial constraints after a disappointing 15th-place finish in the 2024/25 Premier League season.
