In a significant move for both clubs, Chelsea's talented young defender Alfie Gilchrist is poised to join Middlesbrough on a permanent deal this summer, marking the end of his long association with the Premier League giants. The 21-year-old, who has been a standout prospect in Chelsea’s academy, is attracting strong interest from Championship clubs
Why Alfie Gilchrist has potential
He has been with Chelsea since joining their academy at the Under-11 level in 2014. A versatile defender capable of playing as a right-back or centre-back, Gilchrist has drawn comparisons to Chelsea legend John Terry, who once noted that the youngster reminded him of himself due to his keenness to learn and defensive instincts.
Gilchrist’s leadership qualities were evident early on, as he captained Chelsea’s youth side to the Under-18 Premier League Cup in the 2021/22 season and led them to the FA Youth Cup semi-finals.

Loan spell at Sheffield United
Last season, Gilchrist spent the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Championship side Sheffield United, where he made 32 appearances and provided two assists. His performances at Bramall Lane demonstrated his readiness for senior football, with his tenacity, versatility, and ability to contribute in both defensive and attacking phases earning him praise. Despite an ankle injury curtailing his minutes toward the end of the season, Gilchrist’s experience in the Championship has made him an attractive prospect for clubs in the second tier.
