Newcastle Open Talks with Chelsea Over Defender
Eddie Howe & Enzo Maresca

Newcastle United have opened negotiations with Chelsea over the potential signing of defender Axel Disasi, according to multiple sources.

Disasi, 27, spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa and is now attracting interest from several clubs, with Newcastle emerging as front-runners. Talks are said to be in the early stages, but “negotiations have begun,” and a transfer fee of around €35 million is currently being discussed — though Newcastle are hopeful of reducing that closer to €30 million.

The French centre-back joined Chelsea with high expectations but struggled to establish himself as a consistent performer at Stamford Bridge. However, his time at Villa offered glimpses of his quality, and it appears the Magpies are ready to bet on his Premier League potential.

Villarreal have also expressed interest in the former Monaco defender, while Aston Villa are thought to be considering a permanent move following his recent loan. Still, Newcastle now look to be leading the race.

A Fresh Start for Disasi?

Disasi’s early months at Chelsea showed promise, but inconsistency and a change in management saw his opportunities shrink. A move to Newcastle could offer him a much-needed reset and the chance to settle into a stable role.

He fits the profile of what Newcastle are looking for — experienced, athletic, and proven at Premier League level — and with the club preparing for a demanding season, bolstering the back line is a clear priority.

Disasi Looks Certain to Go – The Only Question Is How

It’s no secret that Chelsea are looking to move on from Axel Disasi this summer. The preferred option is a permanent transfer, but with the defender still tied to a long-term deal, the possibility of a loan with an obligation to buy remains on the table — especially if the market stalls.

Disasi featured heavily in his first season but has since fallen down the pecking order under Enzo Maresca. With little expectation that he’ll play regularly in the new setup, both parties seem open to a fresh start — the only uncertainty now is what form that exit takes.
