The 28-year-old Paraguayan is well versed in european football, with stints at Getafe, Valencia, Hertha Berlin, and Basel, but is yet to test himself in the Premier League.
Centre-back is a position that needed addressing in the Sunderland squad, with last season’s loanee Chris Mepham heading back to Bournemouth.
The current centre-back corps at Sunderland includes; playoff hero Dan Ballard, Luke O’Nien who is returning from injury, Aji Alese, Jenson Seelt, and Joe Anderson.
Alderete should slide directly into the starting lineup alongside Dan Ballard, creating a Premier League capable back four, with Reinildo and Trai Hume at wing-backs.
