Queens Park Rangers have pulled off a stunning transfer coup by securing an agreement to sign Peterborough United’s highly coveted attacker Kwame Poku, outmaneuvering Scottish giants Rangers in the race for his signature. The 23-year-old, whose contract with Peterborough is set to expire at the end of June 2025, is now poised to undergo a medical at QPR as final talks to complete the move take place, according to Football Insider.
Poku, a London-born Ghana international, has been a standout performer for Peterborough since joining from Colchester United in 2021. His explosive pace, flair, and eye for goal have made him one of League One’s most exciting talents, with 36 goals and 37 assists in over 200 senior appearances for the Posh and Colchester. Despite missing significant time due to injury last season, Poku’s 12 goals and 8 assists in just 27 League One matches earned him a place in the EFL League One Team of the Season and Peterborough’s Players’ Player of the Year award. His role in helping the club defend the EFL Trophy further cemented his reputation as a “top drawer” talent, as described by Peterborough’s director of football, Barry Fry.

Rangers, now managed by former Southampton boss Russell Martin, had been confident of landing Poku on a free transfer, with only a modest compensation fee of around £350,000 required due to the player’s age and contract status. The Scottish Premiership side saw Poku as a key addition to bolster their attacking options, having fended off interest from other clubs, including Birmingham City. However, QPR’s late intervention has turned the tables, with the Championship club agreeing a higher compensation fee with Peterborough to secure the winger’s services.
The move represents a significant statement of intent from QPR, who have appointed former Rennes and Strasbourg head coach Julien Stephan as their new manager following Marti Cifuentes’ departure in April. Poku’s versatility, able to play across the front line, aligns with Stephan’s tactical vision, and his prior experience in the Championship—despite Peterborough’s relegation in 2021-22—adds valuable second-tier pedigree to QPR’s squad. The Hoops, who finished 15th in the Championship last season, are also pursuing other targets, including Reading’s Amadou Mbengue and Australian right-back Kealey Adamson, signalling an ambitious transfer window.
