Rubén Dias has extended his contract with Manchester City until at least 2029, with the option of a further year taking him into 2030, the club has confirmed. Dias’s current contract was set to expire in 2027, so the club will be happy to have secured the Portuguese international before the threat of a free transfer loomed. If Dias sees out the entirety of this contract, including the additional year, he will have spent a decade at Manchester City.

More extensions to come?
Dias’s contract extension was first reported almost three weeks ago, so the time between it reportedly being sealed and its official announcement was considerable. Also waiting for official confirmation are the reported extensions of Nico O’Reilly, which was actually first reported days before Dias’s, and Rico Lewis, who only agreed a deal in recent days. Additionally, City have a number of contracts expiring next summer, and while some of these will presumably be allowed to leave on a free transfer, the futures of John Stones and new club captain Bernardo Silva will be ones to watch to see if they extend their stays at City beyond 2026.
Dias’s Importance to City
Since his signing for the club in 2020, Rúben Dias has become an integral part of City’s defence, filling the leadership role left vacant when long-time captain Vincent Kompany left the club in 2019. Dias has won a lucrative number of trophies, including four Premier Leagues and one of each of every other trophy available to City. He won Player of the Season during his first year in the league, has long been a member of City’s leadership group and has been touted as a future City captain, something that has been reinforced in the wake of this extension.

Conclusion
While it was reportedly concluded weeks ago, City fans will be delighted to see a player that was so integral to their historic four titles in a row, their first two trips to the Champions League final, and their treble, locked down for years to come.
