Sunderland Deadline Day Recap
Sunderland’s Stadium of Light will host new signings Geertruida, Brobbey, and Traore.

Sunderland capped off a historic summer transfer window with a prolific Deadline Day haul, along with some outgoings to trim the squad down. So here is every Deadline Day deal you might have missed!

Incomings

Lutsharel Geertruida - Loan with £17 million Buy Option from RB Leipzig - Another real statement of intent from Sunderland, by signing the Dutch international defender on loan from the German side, with a £17 million buy option at the end of the deal. Geertruida has 14 Champions League appearances shared between his time at Feyenoord and Leipzig, along with countless more Europa and Conference League appearences.

Brian Brobbey - £17.3 Million from Ajax - The Marc Guiu replacement, Brian Brobbey makes the switch to Sunderland from Dutch giants Ajax. Brobbey has been a mainstay in the Ajax squad since 2022, including a monster season in 2023/24, racking up 22 goals and nine assists. Brobbey declined statistically last season, with some scary off-the-field issues affecting his personal life, but there is absolutely one hell of a player in there, now donning the red and white stripes.

Bertrand Traore - £2.5 million from Ajax - Filling a Patrick Roberts sized hole in the Sunderland squad, is Bertrand Traore. The 29-year-old winger has a wealth of experience throughout his career, including stints at Lyon, Aston Villa, and most recently, Ajax. The Burkina Faso international will surely take up a rotation role within the squad, coming off the bench, providing impact minutes at the end of close games, adding leadership and experience to the squad, all for a bargain fee.

Outgoings

Alan Browne - Loaned to Middlesbrough - Alan Browne signed for Sunderland on a free last summer, after spending his entire career up to that point at Preston North End. The Irishman played a rotation role in Sunderland’s promotion campaign, and had no place in the Premier League squad, so the loan to down the road Middlesbrough makes sense.

Marc Guiu - End of Loan, Chelsea - As previously reported, Marc Guiu returns to Chelsea after only three Sunderland appearances, after the injury to Liam Delap, and Nicolas Jackson‘s loan to Bayern Munich, left Chelsea narrow in their striker corps.

Jenson Seelt - Loaned to Wolfsburg - Seelt had made three appearances for Sunderland so far this season, but with the incoming transfers made, his spot was always in question. Some time in the Bundesliga should hopefully develop the young Dutchman into a starting calibre centre-back in the future.

Niall Huggins - Loaned to Wycombe Wanderers - After suffering a horrific leg injury early on last season, the Welshman has been fighting his way back to full health, finally re-appearing in the Carabao Cup loss to Huddersfield. Therefore, this loan to League One side Wycombe makes sense.

Patrick Roberts - Loaned to Birmingham - A club legend, no doubt about it. Without Patrick Roberts, who knows where Sunderland would be? That pivotal goal in the League One playoff semi-final at Hillsborough, the inch-perfect pass to unlock Eliezer Mayenda in the Championship playoff final, while playing on a torn calf, Roberts has been at the heart of everything positive for Sunderland since signing in January 2022. The 28-year-old has fallen out of favour in the Premier League, and the time was right to move on. Hopefully, this isn't the beginning of the end for Patrick Roberts and Sunderland.

Nazariy Rusyn - Loaned to Arka Gdynia - Rusyn hasn’t featured much for Sunderland since 2023, with his highlight for the club being his late equaliser away at Middlesborough. Rusyn was on loan last season at Hajduk Split, and this season will be in the Polish top flight at Arka Gdynia.

The Rusyn deal concluded Sunderland’s Deadline Day dealings, capping off a historic transfer window for a promoted club, and will hopefully prove enough to keep Sunderland in the Premier League long term!
