Max Dowman Premier League youngest ever goalscorer
Max Dowman Premier League youngest ever goalscorer

An injury time goal by teenage sensation Max Dowman gave Arsenal a 2-0 win against David Moyes's Everton in their Premier League meeting at the Emirates on Saturday evening. Everton were chasing an equaliser after Viktor Gyokeres had put the Gunners ahead on 88 minutes and piled forward for a late corner but were undone when Martinelli's flick on was taken down expertly by Dowman who headed past Vitali Mykolenko and then skipped over the challenge of Dewsbury Hall and sprinted towards the unguarded Everton net where he slotted home.

Cue rapturous celebrations from the Arsenal players rushing to congratulate the young goal scorer and the Emirates celebrated with their record breaking star. A momentous occasion for the club and an unforgettable first Arsenal goal for the teenager. Incidentally, prior to Dowman's goal, the youngest ever Premier League goal scorer was Everton's James Vaughan who held the record for 21 years after scoring for Everton aged 16 years and 270 days in 2005, Max is 16 years and 73 days old and is now the youngest ever player to score in the 33 year history of the Premier League. His goal secured the points for the Gunners and with title rivals, Manchester City later drawing away to West Ham seen the Gunners open up a nine point lead in the league.

Champions League

With no league game scheduled until the April 11th visit of Bournemouth, the attention switches rapidly again this week to the Champions League round of 16 and the second leg against Bayer Leverkusen. In last weeks first leg, the Gunners snatched a late equaliser in Germany courtesy of an 88th minute penalty from Kai Havertz and will be hopeful of advancing to the last eight this week with home advantage playing a big part in the outcome.

In the game Arsenal had strong spells in the first half and maybe could have gone in at the break leading but it was a a quick Leverkusen attack early in the second half which broke the deadlock before Havertz levelled the tie. Yet again Arsenal finished strong when it looked like the game was going to frustrate them and Mikel Arteta was speaking about the teams mindset after the match saying that "I liked that emotionally we understood what we had to do. The level of execution obviously has to be better and it will be better in the second leg. We will adapt a few things and then we'll move on".

Carabao Cup Final

With the club still in contention in all four competitions this season, Arsenal have to continue shutting out the noise and taking it one game at a time. Understandably though as the season progresses, the Arsenal supporters are growing with confidence that maybe this season could be something special, talk though of winning trophies in the middle of March is still premature and Arteta will keep those conversations to a minimum for now.

After the Tuesday clash against Leverkusen however, the conversations surrounding winning trophies will be justified with Sunday's upcoming Carabao Cup final against Manchester City rapidly approaching. The meeting earlier in the season finished in a 1-1 draw with City playing a more defensive game than usual but this encounter gives each side a chance to put some silverware on the table and a potential psychological boost for the winners as the title race enters it's final stages. Can Arsenal strike that blow and boost the team as they seek to win their first league title in over 22 years? Sunday's game is important in so many ways and Arteta will relish the opportunity.
