Since 2020, Chelsea is the higher English club in academy players sales by £365, most of them are under the new era of the consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
Why are Chelsea selling their academy players?
Investing in the men's first team, women's first team and academy players were three of other specific pillars were established by the new hierarchy after the acquisition of the club in May 2020 with the departure of Roman Abramovich who was forced to the sale by United Kingdom due to Russia-Ukraine political conflict.
Although the new regime is determined of the importance of youth players but on the other hand they found it a clear profit to balance their financial situation every transfer window and to recycle part of that money in other promising stars.
Keep the best, sell the rest
The line up which started this season of the premier league against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge was made of up of 3 pure defenders raised from the academy, Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah and Josh Acheampong.
While in the same summer transfer window, the club have sold Armando Broja and Bashir Humphreys who were direct graduates of Cobham.
So, the new regime is following a pattern with academy players, simply "keep the best, sell the rest" whatever the reason of the sale; lack of game time, limited chances, offload players, player's fitness or balancing finances, the managers always find their ways in sales books and the best of the best will force themselves to the coach and the first team.
