Villarreal are making a determined effort to secure what could be their most important signing of the season, with Premier League side Chelsea’s Portuguese defender Renato Veiga emerging as their top target. The La Plana club is aware, however, that landing the 22-year-old would require an unprecedented financial effort.
High Price Tag Blocks Deal
Although Veiga is no longer in Chelsea’s plans, having once been tracked by Atlético Madrid. The London club is demanding more than €35 million for his transfer. This figure is currently beyond Villarreal’s reach. Still, the Spanish side remains hopeful that as the transfer window draws to a close, Chelsea’s demands may ease.
Club president Fernando Roig and his board see Veiga as a signing that would benefit both the present and the future. His youth and potential are considered valuable assets for Villarreal’s long-term project. Even so, his signing is expected to surpass the club’s transfer record of €25 million paid for Paco Alcácer in 2020.
Agreement with Player Reached
Reports from British outlets, including the BBC, suggest that Veiga has already reached an agreement with Villarreal. The move now depends on negotiations between the clubs, which remain distant from a final deal.

Villarreal’s pursuit of Veiga is also driven by necessity. With defenders Willy Kambwala and Logan Costa sidelined through injury, the club urgently requires reinforcements at the back. Should negotiations for Veiga fail, Villarreal will be forced to turn their attention to alternative defensive options before the window closes.
