Crazy scenes at the Johan Cruijff Arena led to Ajax’s clash with FC Groningen being abandoned in the early stages on Sunday afternoon.

A group of home fans behind the goal unveiled a massive pyro display just a few minutes into the game, along with a large number of fireworks being set off around the stand, some landing on the pitch.

The actions, believed to be a tribute to a well-known Ajax supporter who passed away recently, forced the players to subsequently leave the pitch. After a 45-minute delay, the players did re-emerge, only for more fireworks to appear, leaving referee Bas Nijhuis with little option but to abandon the game.

The 36-time Dutch champions released a statement shortly after, condemning the small section of fans' behaviour as 'utterly outrageous' and promising that those found guilty of setting off fireworks will face fines and stadium bans.

The teams will complete the game on Tuesday afternoon, behind closed doors. Both Ajax and Groningen are level on points in 6th and 7th places, respectively.

From hero to villain

Two weeks after his heroics in Budapest to take Ireland to the World Cup Play-Offs, AZ Alkmaar's top scorer Troy Parrott spurned a 99th-minute chance to grab an equaliser from the spot - with an off-target panenka.

An out-of-form AZ were trailing a Twente side 1-0 away from home, after Daan Rots side side-foot finish had put the hosts in front.

Maarten Martens' side, who had won one of their previous four games, were handed a lifeline in the dying seconds after a trip in the box.

However, 23-year-old Parrott missed the opportunity to score his eighth goal of the season after casually chipping his penalty over the bar.

Wins at the top

PSV continued their fine run of form, last reaching a new height at Anfield a week ago, with a 3-0 win at home to Volendam.

They are unbeaten in 13 games, winning 10 of them and scoring 39 goals in the process.

They remain six points clear of Feyenoord, who picked up a scrappy but much-needed win at newly promoted Telstar, occupying the basement spot in the league.

The Eredivisie‘s top scorer, Japanese striker Ayase Ueda, scored his 14th of the season to send the points back to Rotterdam and end a run of four straight defeats for Robin Van Persie.

NEC Nijmegen’s impressive start also continued, as a 3-1 win at home to Sparta saw last season’s 8th place finishers move up into 3rd place above AZ. They’ve also scored 36 goals this season, with only PSV beating that tally so far.
