Aston Villa have announced that left-back Lucas Digne has signed a new contract which will keep him at the club until 2028. The French international joined Villa from Everton for £25 million in January 2022 and has since gone on to make 138 appearances for the Villans.

Digne has been a crucial player for Villa since Unai Emery joined the club. His performances have been transformed under the Spaniard's leadership, especially last season where he was consistently one of Villa's better players. Throughout his time at Villa, Digne has had to face competition for his position at left-back.
Alex Moreno was signed when Emery first joined and Digne soon after lost his starting place. Moreno was injured at the start of the 23/24 season which allowed Digne a way back into the XI, which he grabbed with both hands. Ian Maatsen was then signed at the start of last season which provided Digne with more competition, but Emery favoured the 32-year-old and through his good performances he kept his place.
His leadership and experience proved to be valuable at times last season, especially in the Champions League. Emery will need him to continue to step up and provide consistent performances in order for them to progress through the Europa League and finish in a Champions League spot.
