Benjamin Šeško set for Manchester United medical
RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško scored 21 goals in all competitions last season

Manchester United are moving close to finalising their move for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško, as the Slovenian has been given permission by his club to fly for a medical. David Ornstein reports that this comes following an agreement between the two clubs, with United set to pay a total of around £73m including add-ons.

Another striker?

The signing of Šeško will signal yet another striker heading to Old Trafford, following Matheus Cunha’s switch from Wolves earlier in the window and Rasmus Højlund’s move two summers ago. United will be hoping that their double swoop this window will help them improve their attack, which only scored 44 goals in the Premier League last season, the 5th worst in the league. In addition to the two strikers is Brentford winger Bryan Mbuemo. Across the three attacking signings, United are bringing in a total of 48 league goals, more than their Premier League tally last year.

What next for United?

United have also been linked with a move for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba recently, so presumably their next order of business will be attempting to get that move over the line. This may prove difficult after the expenditure of the Šeško deal, with United reportedly struggling to finance moves across the summer. Brighton are never an easy club to negotiate with, and their massive sales of the likes of Moises Caicédo and Enzo Fernández in recent years will not leave the club desperate for money. Whether United will be able to secure Baleba’s services is somewhat questionable, but they have always found ways to afford players they want in the past, for better or for worse.

Conclusion

United will be happy to near the conclusion of a transfer saga that saw them competing with Newcastle for the striker’s signature, a victory which will pile misery on the Tyneside club’s already difficult transfer window. Even beyond the goals that Šeško may bring, their ability to pull a player away from a Champions League club even after their historically bad 2024/25 season will surely be a sign that they still hold sway in today’s football market.
