Just 72 days after lifting the Champions League trophy, Gianluigi Donnarumma’s future at Paris Saint-Germain has taken a shocking turn. The Italian goalkeeper’s contract, set to expire in 2026, remains without renewal, with PSG refusing to meet his salary demands. The club has now opened the door for his departure.
Donnarumma has been left out of the European Super Cup squad against Tottenham. The goalkeeper, who played a decisive role in PSG’s European success, has been replaced by new signing Lucas Chevalier. Arnau Tenas, also facing contract uncertainty, is absent from the squad.

Abati Questions PSG's Decision
Christian Abbiati, Donnarumma’s former mentor at AC Milan, expressed disbelief at the decision. Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he said:
“There’s something crazy about all this. Or maybe something happened we don’t know about. Otherwise, it’s something that has no logical explanation.
Abbiati credited Donnarumma with being “more than half responsible” for PSG’s Champions League triumph, noting his spectacular saves against Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal.
“In Europe, he made saves that few could make. Sure, there are better players with their feet, but replacing a keeper who gave you a Champions League is hard to justify.”
Abbiati rated Donnarumma “an 11 between the posts and a 6.5 with his feet” — still more than enough, he believes, to keep him at PSG.
Italian Media Reacts: “This Way to the Door!”
Italian newspapers have been quick to criticize PSG’s move. Corriere dello Sport compared Donnarumma’s situation to past exits of Italian goalkeepers like Sirigu and Buffon, splashing “This way to the door!” across its front page.

Sky Italia questioned the abrupt nature of the split, describing Donnarumma as a “forgotten hero” just two months after his Champions League heroics.
