Liverpool 0–1 Arsenal | Premier League | 1 November 2026
There are performances that announce themselves through spectacular goals, assists and moments of individual brilliance. Then there are performances built on discipline, concentration, physical authority and an almost ruthless commitment to defending. Ezri Konsa delivered the latter at Anfield.
While Kai Havertz’s 16th-minute finish secured Arsenal’s historic 1–0 victory over Liverpool, Konsa’s contribution at the opposite end of the pitch deserves considerably more attention. In an atmosphere where Liverpool were expected to test Arsenal’s defensive resolve, the England international produced a performance that underlined why defensive reliability remains one of the most valuable qualities in elite football. And the numbers tell an impressive story.
According to Sky Sports, Konsa won all eight of the duels he contested. Eight out of eight. Against Liverpool’s attacking players, in one of the most demanding environments in English football, that is an extraordinary level of defensive consistency.
But the significance of his performance extended beyond the statistics.

Liverpool possess the attacking quality to punish even the smallest defensive mistake. Their ability to attack spaces, combine between the lines and stretch defensive structures makes defending against them a particularly difficult assignment. Konsa approached the challenge with impressive composure.
His ability to compete physically, maintain his positioning and deal with Liverpool’s forward movements helped Arsenal retain control of the spaces that mattered most. Winning every one of his eight recorded duels was not simply about physical strength. It reflected his timing, anticipation and willingness to engage opponents rather than allow them comfortable opportunities to turn and attack.
At Anfield, hesitation can be punished. Konsa showed very little of it.
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Arsenal’s performance was how the defensive unit operated collectively. Mikel Arteta’s side were forced to endure periods of Liverpool pressure, particularly after taking the lead. However, Arsenal remained compact, disciplined and difficult to penetrate. Konsa’s partnership with Gabriel Magalhães provided an important foundation for that resilience.
The two defenders were supported by a midfield structure that included Declan Rice and Bruno Guimarães, while the wider defensive unit worked tirelessly to limit Liverpool’s attacking options.

This was not a performance built around throwing bodies in front of everything. It was about understanding distances, protecting dangerous spaces and making sure Liverpool could not establish sustained control in Arsenal’s penalty area.
Opta reported that Liverpool failed to register a shot on target, a remarkable outcome for a side playing at home and chasing an equaliser. Gary Neville described Arsenal’s display as a defensive masterclass, while Jamie Carragher praised the team’s resilience. Konsa was an important part of that collective achievement. Defending a narrow lead at Anfield requires a particular mentality.
The crowd can create enormous pressure, and Liverpool are capable of turning seemingly harmless situations into dangerous attacking opportunities. Arsenal had to remain switched on throughout the contest.
Konsa’s contribution was particularly valuable because he maintained his defensive discipline rather than allowing the occasion to dictate his decisions. His duelling ability and composure helped Arsenal negotiate the difficult periods without losing their organisational structure.
The fact that Liverpool struggled to break down Arsenal’s defensive setup, despite pushing for an equaliser, says plenty about the concentration levels across the back line. This was a performance in which every defensive action mattered.
Declan Rice deserved the headlines for his outstanding midfield performance and assist for Havertz’s winner. Gabriel was equally influential in the defensive battle. But Konsa deserves to be included in the conversation. His eight successful duels from eight attempts provide a compelling snapshot of a defender who was completely committed to his assignment.
There is something particularly satisfying about watching a defender make difficult work look straightforward. No unnecessary risks, no panic, no needless complications. Just intelligent positioning, physical commitment and the discipline to execute the basics exceptionally well.
That was Konsa at Anfield.

Arsenal did not simply win a football match. They went to a difficult ground, absorbed pressure and demonstrated the defensive mentality required of a side with serious ambitions.
Havertz supplied the decisive moment. Rice controlled the midfield battle. But Konsa helped ensure that Liverpool had no answer at the other end.
Sometimes, the most important contributions are made by players who never get anywhere near the scoresheet.
At Anfield, Ezri Konsa made defending look like an art form.
