Cardiff City’s Carabao Cup campaign came to an abrupt end after a 2-1 defeat to Norwich City at the Cardiff City Stadium, despite a late Yousef Salech goal giving the Bluebirds hope in stoppage time.
Mathias Kvistgaarden gave Norwich the lead midway through the first half before Ante Crnac doubled the visitors’ advantage late in the second. Salech pulled one back in the 93rd minute, but Cardiff could not find a late equaliser.
The result was overshadowed by a landmark moment for Noah Anyadike, who became both Cardiff City’s youngest-ever senior player and the youngest player in EFL Cup history who started at centre-back, aged just 15 years and 98 days.
Anyadike Makes History
With Cardiff short of senior centre-back options due to injury, Brian Barry-Murphy handed Anyadike his competitive debut in a much-changed side.
The Wales youth international broke the previous EFL Cup record held by Harvey Elliott, who was 15 years and 174 days old when he featured for Fulham against Millwall in 2018.
It was a remarkable occasion for the teenager, who started alongside experienced figures including Perry Ng, Joel Bagan and Nathan Trott.
Anyadike had already featured during pre-season, but this was his first competitive appearance for the Bluebirds — and one that will be remembered as a significant moment in the club’s history.

Kvistgaarden Gives Norwich the Lead
Cardiff began with their trademark possession-based domination and looked to make an early impression, with David Turnbull sending an effort narrowly over after 22 minutes.
However, Norwich soon began to apply pressure from set pieces.
The Canaries won a series of corners and, after Cardiff had initially dealt with one delivery, they were unable to prevent the visitors from taking the lead from the next.
Jacob Wright’s cross found Kvistgaarden in the centre of the box, with the forward rising to head home and put Norwich ahead after 25 minutes.

Cardiff Search for a Response
The Bluebirds looked to respond before half-time and created a couple of promising openings.
Callum Robinson tested Norwich goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw with a low effort from outside the area, while Turnbull later saw another shot blocked following good work from Joel Colwill.
Norwich remained dangerous themselves, with Trott forced into a save from Liam Gibbs as the visitors looked to build on their advantage.
Cardiff continued to move the ball well in spells, but a lack of precision and Norwich’s defensive organisation ensured they went into the break with their one-goal lead intact.
Anyadike’s Debut Ends Early
Norwich nearly doubled their advantage shortly after the restart when substitute Anis Ben Slimane struck the crossbar with a header.
Cardiff then suffered a setback of their own when Anyadike was forced off in the 53rd minute, bringing a premature end to his historic debut. Thankfully, this was just a bout of cramps.
Rubin Colwill replaced the 15-year-old, who had completed 53 minutes on an evening that marked a record-breaking step in his career. In turn, Alex Robertson filled in for Noah's absence.
The Bluebirds continued to press for an equaliser, with Turnbull forcing Grimshaw into a save from distance before Barry-Murphy turned to his attacking options.
Jack Moylan, Yousef Salech and Cian Ashford were all introduced as Cardiff looked to find a way back into the tie.
Crnac Makes the Difference
Salech quickly made his presence felt in the Norwich box, but headed two opportunities wide after coming on.
Moylan also saw an effort blocked, while Alex Robertson had a shot from distance charged down as Cardiff began to build more sustained pressure.
But just as the hosts looked capable of finding an equaliser, Norwich delivered the decisive blow.
Ante Crnac had replaced Kvistgaarden shortly after the hour mark and made an immediate impact on the contest.
Jack Stacey found the Croatian forward inside the box, and Crnac fired a left-footed finish home to double Norwich’s advantage after 78 minutes.
It was a major blow for Cardiff, leaving the Bluebirds needing two goals in the closing stages.

Salech Gives Cardiff Late Hope
Cardiff refused to give in and continued to push forward in search of a route back into the game.
Their persistence was rewarded in the third minute of added time when Salech found the net.
The striker collected the ball in the middle of the area, brushing aside Harry Darling, and struck a left-footed effort into the top-left corner to reduce the deficit.
The goal briefly lifted the atmosphere inside Cardiff City Stadium, with the Bluebirds suddenly given hope of forcing a dramatic equaliser.
Moylan had one final effort blocked in the closing moments, but Norwich held out to book their place in the third round.

A Night of Mixed Emotions
For Barry-Murphy, there will be disappointment at Cardiff’s exit after a performance that contained periods of promise but ultimately not enough of high quality.
The wing pairing of Chris Willock and Isaak Davies was far from the levels required of them, with Ronan Kpakio also struggling for large periods of the evening - particularly in 1v1 scenarios.
The Bluebirds showed character to keep fighting until the end, while Salech once again demonstrated his importance with another goal.
Despite the result, the standout moment of the evening belonged to Anyadike. Although his debut ended early, the 15-year-old made history, with the Cardiff hierarchy being hopeful that Noah could be the next successful academy product across the production line.
It was not the result Cardiff wanted, but it was an unforgettable night for one of the club’s brightest young prospects.
