Cardiff City produced their most emphatic performance of the Championship season, sweeping Watford aside in a 5-1 victory at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Jack Moylan was the headline act in the false 9 role, winning and converting an early penalty before adding a composed second in the 35th minute. Mattie Pollock’s own goal, Ollie Tanner’s strike in first-half added time, and Callum Robinson’s late finish made for a remarkable night for the Bluebirds.
Watford threatened early and had a chance to take the lead, but Nathan Trott’s save from Myron Boadu proved crucial. From that point, Cardiff were ruthless, turning their pressure into goals and giving the home crowd the response they had wanted after Saturday’s defeat at Blackburn.
Trott Keeps Cardiff Level
The evening could have taken a very different direction in the opening minutes.
A poor back-pass from Dylan Lawlor allowed Boadu to run through on goal, but Trott stood up well to make the save. It was a significant intervention, particularly against a Watford side that had arrived under pressure and in desperate need of a result.
Cardiff quickly recovered their composure and began to play with purpose. Moylan was central to that early momentum, dropping into spaces between Watford’s defence and midfield before driving towards the penalty area whenever the opportunity arose.

Moylan Gives Cardiff the Perfect Start
The breakthrough arrived in the 11th minute when Moylan won a penalty after some great link-up play with Ollie Tanner, which led to Moylan being brought down by Watford captain Mattie Pollock.
Moylan stepped up himself and dispatched the ball past Federico Ravaglia's right-hand post, putting Cardiff ahead with a confident finish. It was a moment that gave the home side belief and left Watford looking increasingly vulnerable.
The Irish midfielder continued to cause problems through his movement and directness. Cian Ashford was also influential, carrying the ball forward and looking to link with Moylan, Tanner and Chris Willock across the attacking line.

Cardiff Turn the Screw
Cardiff’s second came after 35 minutes, with Ashford finding Moylan through the middle. The 23-year-old took the pass in his stride, found himself one-on-one with Ravaglia and calmly picked his spot.
It was a finish full of confidence and underlined Moylan’s importance to Brian Barry-Murphy's side. His performance against Blackburn had been one of the few positives from a disappointing afternoon, and he followed it with a display that combined work rate, creativity and clinical quality.
There was a concern when Lawlor was forced off through injury shortly before the half-hour mark, with Will Fish replacing him, but Cardiff did not lose their rhythm. Pollock then headed into his own net from a Cardiff corner in the 41st minute, before Tanner added a fourth deep into first-half stoppage time.
Perry Ng supplied the assist for Tanner, who cut in from the right and found the bottom corner with his left foot. Cardiff had been clinical, energetic and aggressive, while Watford had simply been unable to handle the speed of the Bluebirds’ attacking play.

Willock Creates More Danger
Cardiff began the second half still looking for more rather than sitting back on their four-goal lead.
Tanner remained a threat, going close on several occasions, while Moylan almost completed his hat-trick with two headed efforts. Willock kept driving at the Watford defence from the left and won a second penalty after being fouled by Edo Kayembe.
There was no hat-trick for Moylan, however, as Willock took responsibility from the spot and saw his effort saved by Ravaglia. It was one of the few moments that did not go Cardiff’s way, though it did little to change the overall mood inside the stadium.
Willock’s willingness to carry the ball and commit defenders had been a key part of Cardiff’s dominance. The missed penalty was frustrating, but it came from another positive piece of attacking play rather than a lack of intent.
Moylan was fuming that Willock didn’t give him the ball to get his hat trick and ye, Willock missed the penalty in the end….

Robinson Adds a Fifth
Brian Barry-Murphy used his bench to keep Cardiff fresh, with David Turnbull and Calum Scanlon introduced in the 69th minute before Robinson replaced Tanner later on.
Turnbull made an immediate impact. In the 85th minute, he picked out Robinson inside the area, and the substitute finished low into the corner to make it 5-0.
It was Robinson’s second goal in as many matches after he struck at Blackburn, and another reminder of the value his experience can bring to a young Cardiff side. Tanner had been excellent before his substitution, stretching Watford on the right and taking his goal with real composure, while Robinson ensured there was no drop in the threat Cardiff carried from the bench.
Watford Find Only a Consolation
Watford eventually pulled one back through Hector Kyprianou, who headed home smartly from Iker Bravo’s cross and some static Bluebirds defending in the 87th minute.
It was the only real blemish on an otherwise commanding performance, although Cardiff had already done enough to make the result beyond doubt. Trott made further saves when required, and the defensive unit recovered well after Lawlor’s early departure.
The final whistle brought a deserved ovation for Cardiff. The Bluebirds had been sharp in front of goal, but the scoreline was also a reflection of their work without the ball and their willingness to keep attacking long after the match appeared won.

A Result to Build On
This was Cardiff’s second league win of the season and lifts them to 18th in the Championship.
Moylan will rightly take the headlines after his two goals, but this was a collective performance. Ashford’s assist and attacking energy, Tanner’s direct running, Ng’s delivery, Willock’s creativity, Turnbull’s impact from the bench and Robinson’s finish all helped make it a memorable night.
There are still concerns over Lawlor’s fitness after his early substitution, but Cardiff could not have asked for a more convincing response to the Blackburn defeat. The challenge now is to turn a statement win into sustained momentum.
