The Home Straight, analysis and predictions for April
William Saliba, Arsenal

Now that the Carabao cup is firmly behind us, it's time to take a look at what the next month of the season holds for Mikel Arteta's Arsenal. The International break surely has come at a good time for the Gunners, allowing them to reorganise and regroup ahead of an exciting run of fixtures and we take a look at those fixtures here.

Schedule

Southampton, F.A Cup Quarter Final, April 4th Up next on Saturday April 4th is the F.A Cup quarter final at St. Mary's Stadium as Arsenal take on promotion chasing Championship side, Southampton. Currently in 6th place in the table on 63 points, the Saints are formidable opposition and are the Championship's form team over the last 5 matches, winning four and drawing one. Nonetheless and despite their contrasting league positions, the Gunner's have had mixed results away to Southampton in the Premier League, winning two of their previous four meetings, (2025 & 2021) although the home side had the better of their 2022 league encounters, taking 4 points from Arsenal that year. The last F.A Cup meeting at St.Mary's also went the way of the Saints, a Gabriel own goal securing the win in the fourth round in January 2021. Therefore, given the significance of the tie and the form of both teams, it promises to be a tough outing for Arteta and his Gunner's, a close one but ruling in favour of Arsenal as they chase down an historic season. Prediction 1-3

Sporting C.P, Champion's League Quarter Final, 7th April Arsenal's quest for the Champion's League resumes three days later on Tuesday 7th April as the Gunner's travel to the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon, Portugal to take on Sporting C.P in the last eight of this years competition. Having overturned a 3-0 first leg defecit against Bodo Glimt in the previous round, Sporting will go into this tie with increased confidence although recent history against Arsenal indicates a tougher match for the Portuguese club. Arsenal on the other hand defeated Bayer Leverkusen in their round of 16 and have won nine out of their ten Champions league matches this season. Their head to head record from five previous encounters reads well for Arsenal with two wins and three draws and although they've only met once in those matches in the Champion's League, it was a comprehensive win for the Gunners, winning 5-1 away to Sporting in November 2024. It will be the first time also since moving from Sporting that Viktor Gyokeres returns to his former club after a summer transfer to Arsenal and hopefully a winning one. With the return leg played at the Emirates the following week, bringing an advantage home would be desirable and the expectation here is an away win for Arsenal. Prediction 0-1

Bournemouth, Premier League 11th April After almost three weeks without any Premier league fixtures, It's back to basics again for Arsenal and their quest for league glory continues with a crucial home game against Andoni Iraola's Bournemouth on April 11th. Five successive draws for the Cherries sees the club lying in 13th position on 42 points and a sizable 28 points behind league leaders Arsenal but conversely and as the stats show, Bournemouth have become hard to beat in recent games. Nonetheless and despite the current run of form experienced by Bournemouth, it has been a very profitable fixture for Arsenal especially in recent years stretching back to 2015. In the eight home games played against Bournemouth during that time, Arsenal have scored 21 goals and won an impressive 7 from those 8 matches before finally losing by the odd goal in last seasons match up. Therefore and eager to keep the pressure on 2nd placed Manchester City, this looks like a home win for Arsenal. Prediction 2-0

Sporting C.P, Champion's League Quarter Final, 15th April Wednesday the 15th April sees the return leg of Arsenal's Champion's League quarter final against Sporting C.P and with the Gunners within touching distance of a semi final appearance it's set to be a memorable night in north London. Home form in this years's competition has been a huge contributor to their success to date with the Gunners winning all five of their ties at the Emirates, scoring fourteen and conceding three goals along the way. On that basis and considering the importance of home form, it looks like a comfortable night for Arsenal. Prediction 2-0

Manchester City, Premier League 19th April The visit to the Etihad stadium to face Manchester City on Sunday the 19th April could be the most pivotal league fixture of 2026 for Arsenal as they bid to win their first league title in 22 years. Pep Guardiola holds the bragging rights so far this season with their 2-0 win over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final played just over a week ago and Mikel Arteta's Gunners will be keen to redress the balance and put one hand on the Premier league trophy in the process. City though will be equally motivated by this fixture and know that victory here could swing the title race back in their favour. In fact their home record is quite impressive having lost only one match at home all season and that was against Tottenham Hotspur back in August. Nevertheless, in previous title winning seasons, Arsenal have managed to get results away to tough opposition when the league title was on the line, namely at Anfield against Liverpool with that Michael Thomas goal in 88/89, at Old Trafford against Manchester United in May 2002 with a Sylvain Wiltord winner and more recently at White Hart Lane in 2004 when the Invincibles secured the point they needed to win the league with a 2-2 draw, goals from Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires ensuring our name was on the trophy. They have also won it at Stamford Bridge twice (1933 & 1934) and White Hart Lane in 1971. In conclusion, this looks like a defensive battle with both sides getting fewer opportunities than normal and although the pundits will tell us that Arsenal need a result here it could be that City are under more pressure to win to maintain their title push and that will suit Arteta more so. Prediction 1-1

Newcastle United, Premier League 25th April The final match in a hectic April schedule is the home match against Newcastle United in the Premier league on Saturday April 25th. Three defeats in their last five matches seen the Magpies slide out to 12th in the table on 42 points and manager Eddie Howe will be keen to arrest that slide and push his side into contention for the European places again. History though is not on his side as Newcastle have not had the best of records in recent times when visiting the Gunners. In fact they have only managed one draw from the last 10 meetings and that was a 0-0 draw back in 2023, therefore given the history between the two, it looks like the form book writes itself with a home win for Arsenal although the importance of the occasion could see nerves at times for the title chasing Gunners. Prediction 3-1
