Villa have been targeting defensive cover ever since Axel Disasi's loan ended. They had a bid rejected earlier in the window for Crystal Palace bound Jaydee Canvot, but never returned with a second bid. Due to Villa's financial constraints, the signing of Lindelof on a free transfer makes sense as the Swede is a more than capable backup to Ezri Konsa.
Experienced Lindelof
Lindelof provides Villa with a wealth of experience having played over 450 professional games, including 284 appearances at Manchester United. He spent eight seasons at Old Trafford shifting from a regular starter to a squad player in the last couple of seasons. Only Youri Tielemans has played more games in European competitions than Lindelof, which should help Villa in their bid to win the Europa League this season. Lindelof has also been capped 71 times for his country.
Villa now have depth and experience at centre-back and whilst the signing of Lindelof doesn't "wow" people, it's certainly a smart piece of business for Villa. He is a Premier League level player and will certainly do a job at the back when called upon.
First Interview
Speaking in hist first interview with the club, Lindelof expressed his excitement to join Villa.
"It’s a massive club, and I was super excited when I heard that the club wanted me."
"I’ve been at the Premier League for many years, so I know what it’s all about. Hopefully, I can help the younger players with my experience, and also bring in the quality like I show on the pitch. I am super, super happy and thrilled to be part of this football club."
He spoke to former Villa player and Swedish teammate Robin Olsen regarding the move.
"I called him (Olsen) straight away, and he only had good things to say about the club, and everyone working around the club as well.
"Obviously, that gave me a very good feeling as well, and just positive things that made everything easier."
With the international break now here, Lindelof now has a couple of weeks to get integrated into the Villa team ahead of their next match against Everton on September 13th.
