Everything You Need to Know About Leeds United Target Lucas Perri
Perri is set to join Leeds United

With Leeds United preparing for life back in the Premier League, attention has turned to strengthening their squad—especially between the posts. One name drawing serious attention is Lucas Perri, a towering Brazilian goalkeeper who’s quietly becoming one of the most reliable shot-stoppers in Europe. Here’s everything you need to know about the man Leeds have earmarked as a potential upgrade on Illan Meslier.

Who Is Lucas Perri?

Lucas Estella Perri was born on December 10, 1997, in Campinas, Brazil. Standing at a commanding 6'5", the 27-year-old goalkeeper brings both presence and composure to the backline. Currently contracted with Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais until 2028, Perri’s journey to prominence has been anything but conventional.

Career Journey: From São Paulo to Lyon

Perri began his career in Brazil, developing at Ponte Preta before moving to São Paulo’s youth system. Despite his promise, first-team opportunities were limited. His senior debut came in December 2019, but with just five appearances for São Paulo, his progress stalled.

A brief loan spell at Crystal Palace in 2019 gave him a taste of English football, though he didn’t feature in any first-team matches. It was back in Brazil, during a loan to Náutico in 2022, that Perri found his rhythm. Making 33 appearances and winning the Campeonato Pernambucano, he began to showcase his potential.

Later that year, Perri signed with Botafogo, where he became a fan favorite. Over 50 league appearances and 31 clean sheets later, he had firmly established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in Brazil. This form earned him a move to Lyon in January 2024 for a reported €3.25 million.

Breakthrough at Lyon

Though initially brought in as a backup, Perri didn’t stay on the bench for long. He debuted in the Coupe de France and eventually displaced Anthony Lopes as Lyon’s number one goalkeeper. Over the 2024–25 Ligue 1 season, Perri made 33 league appearances, kept 10 clean sheets, and led the league in total saves. His save percentage of around 75% placed him among the top performers in France.

Style of Play and Strengths

Perri’s primary asset is his shot-stopping ability. He consistently outperforms expected goals metrics, preventing over six goals more than expected during the last campaign. His large frame allows him to dominate aerial duels and claim crosses with confidence—something Leeds have struggled with in recent seasons.

Under Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca, Perri also improved his ball-playing skills. His composure under pressure and ability to initiate attacks from the backline have added a new dimension to his game, making him a modern, well-rounded goalkeeper.

International Recognition

Perri has represented Brazil at both the U20 and U23 levels and earned his first senior call-up in August 2023 for World Cup qualifiers. Though he’s yet to make his debut for the national team, his continued development in Europe could change that soon.

Leeds United’s Interest

Leeds United’s interest in Perri is no surprise. Illan Meslier, while talented, struggled with consistency during the club’s promotion run. Reports indicate Perri is set to join the club, with medical tests booked.
