Cardiff City began their 2026/27 campaign with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Swindon Town in the first round of the Carabao Cup, surviving a spirited second-half comeback from the League Two visitors.
The Bluebirds were forced to come from behind after Louis Millard’s deflected effort gave Swindon an early lead, but Yousef Salech’s brace turned the game around before Paul Glatzel restored parity after the break.
New signing Jack Moylan then made the perfect start to life in the Welsh capital, curling home the winner just minutes after coming off the bench to send Brian Barry-Murphy’s side into the second round.
Millard Gives Swindon the Lead
Cardiff started the game brightly but were caught out inside the opening ten minutes as Swindon took advantage of some neat combination play around the edge of the box.
Louis Millard received the ball in a dangerous position before firing towards the bottom corner, with his effort taking a significant deflection off Gabriel Osho to wrong-foot Nathan Trott and give the visitors a surprise lead.
The early setback did little to derail Cardiff, however, with Cian Ashford and Ollie Tanner providing plenty of attacking threat from the flanks as City looked for a response.
Salech Strikes Back
The equaliser arrived midway through the first half after excellent work from Tanner created another opening.
The winger drove down the right before finding Isaak Davies at the back post, with the forward’s cross striking the hand of Swindon defender Mitch Clark and earning Cardiff a penalty.
Salech stepped up from twelve yards and calmly dispatched the spot-kick into the bottom corner to bring Cardiff level.
The Danish striker, who finished last season as the Bluebirds’ leading scorer, looked sharp throughout the opening half and provided the focal point that Cardiff needed in attack.
Salech Does It Again
Cardiff completed the turnaround just two minutes before the interval.
Ashford burst forward down the left and delivered a perfectly weighted outside-of-the-foot ball into the penalty area, with Salech producing an excellent first-time volley to beat Connor Ripley and put the hosts ahead.
It was a finish that showcased the striker’s confidence and technical quality, while also rewarding Ashford for another impressive attacking contribution.
Cian almost got his own reward before the break when he was played through by David Turnbull, only for his effort to crash against the crossbar as Cardiff entered half-time with a 2-1 advantage - although it can be said that Ashford could have done better in that position.
Glatzel Brings Swindon Back
The second half began at a slower pace, but Swindon soon found a route back into the contest.
Joseph Hungbo delivered a dangerous ball towards the back post, where Paul Glatzel had been left with enough space to force his effort beyond Trott and level the scores on 62 minutes.
The goal gave the visitors renewed belief and forced Cardiff to respond, with Barry-Murphy turning to his bench as he introduced Joel Colwill and Chris Willock before eventually sending Moylan onto the pitch.
It was a decision that would quickly pay dividends.

Moylan Makes His Mark
Moylan had only been on the pitch for five minutes when he produced the decisive moment.
Salech held the ball up brilliantly inside the Swindon penalty area before laying the ball back to the debutant, who took one touch before curling a composed finish into the top-right corner.
Having joined Cardiff from Lincoln earlier in the week, Moylan could hardly have wished for a better introduction to life with his new club.
The midfielder immediately became a favourite with the home supporters and gave Cardiff the lead for the second time in the afternoon.

Bluebirds Hold Firm
Swindon refused to go quietly and almost found another equaliser late on.
Ollie Palmer struck the post with an effort from close range before seeing another attempt deflected over, with Cardiff forced to defend their narrow advantage during the closing stages.
The visitors were dealt another blow when James Debayo was shown a second yellow card in stoppage time following a challenge on Ashford.
Cardiff ultimately saw out the remaining minutes to secure a 3-2 victory and book their place in the second round.
Moylan’s Perfect Start
For Barry-Murphy, there were plenty of positives to take from an entertaining opening competitive fixture.
Salech’s two goals once again demonstrated why the striker will be central to Cardiff’s attacking plans this season, while Ashford continued his impressive development with another influential display.
But the headline belongs to Moylan.
Five minutes after entering the field for his Cardiff debut, the midfielder produced a moment of quality to win the game and send the Bluebirds into the next round.
After an eventful afternoon at Cardiff City Stadium, the Championship returnees have their first competitive victory of the season — and their new signing has already announced himself in style.
