Cardiff City were held to a 2-2 draw by Sheffield United at the Cardiff City Stadium, with an open and chaotic first half giving way to sustained Bluebirds pressure after the break.
Jack Moylan’s early strike gave Cardiff the ideal start, but two costly defensive moments allowed Sheffield United to turn the game around through Tom Cannon’s penalty and Callum O’Hare’s finish. Cian Ashford levelled before the interval, yet Cardiff could not find the goal their second-half dominance warranted.
The result leaves Brian Barry-Murphy’s side unbeaten but still without a Championship victory after three successive draws.
Moylan Starts Brightly
Cardiff were ahead inside two minutes after a fast, direct move involving two of their brightest attacking players.
Ashford carried the ball out from deep and drove Cardiff forward before finding Moylan on the left edge of the penalty area. Moylan cut inside, created space for himself and fired low into the bottom-left corner beyond Michael Cooper.
It was another confident contribution from Moylan, whose energy and willingness to take responsibility in attacking areas stood out again.
Moylan’s early goal should have settled Cardiff, but the home side instead allowed Sheffield United back into the match almost immediately.

Defensive Errors Let Sheffield United In
Sheffield United’s equaliser came after Cardiff were caught on the back foot.
Cannon drove into the penalty area after the visitors won the ball in a dangerous position, and Alex Robertson’s attempt to recover ended with a supposed tug of the shirt. Cannon stepped up and converted the penalty to level the scores.
The setback appeared to unsettle Cardiff. Just three minutes later, Robertson lost the ball on the edge of the area, and Bamford quickly released O’Hare, who finished calmly past Nathan Trott to put Sheffield United ahead.
It was a difficult early spell for Robertson, who had been central to both Sheffield United goals. Cardiff’s defensive shape looked uncertain, and the visitors threatened to take the game away from them.
Trott’s double save from Cannon and Joe Rothwell were therefore crucial. The Cardiff goalkeeper kept his side within one goal at a moment when Sheffield United had the momentum and looked capable of adding a third.
Tanner and Ashford Lead the Response
Cardiff gradually regained control after Trott’s intervention, with Tanner becoming increasingly influential on the right.
The winger was inconsistent with his final ball, but his ability to run directly at defenders caused Sheffield United problems. That quality was decisive for Cardiff’s equaliser in the 38th minute.
Tanner collected possession in the area, wriggled past three defenders, and forced Cooper into a block. Ashford had followed the move, arriving in the right place to sweep the rebound into the empty net.
Ashford’s goal capped an influential first-half display. Having created Moylan’s opener, he showed great positional awareness to anticipate Tanner’s effort and make sure Cardiff’s pressure was rewarded.
The equaliser restored Cardiff’s belief, but it also exposed a familiar issue: the Bluebirds had needed to score twice to recover from two avoidable mistakes.

Cardiff Dominate After the Break
Cardiff began the second half in control and enjoyed the majority of possession, territory and chances.
Salech was involved without being as clinical as Cardiff needed. The striker headed over from an early corner but was largely ineffective as Sheffield United defended deeper, with Cardiff often finding it difficult to turn their approach play into a winning goal.
Tanner went close with an effort that drifted inches wide, while Ashford continued to drive forward whenever Cardiff were able to break the visitors’ lines.
Barry-Murphy introduced Chris Willock for Tanner after 72 minutes, before turning to Callum Robinson, Isaak Davies, Joel Colwill and Calum Scanlon late on. The changes kept Cardiff on the front foot, but they did not solve the problem in the final third.
Cardiff produced 28 shots to Sheffield United’s six, but the volume of attempts did not translate into enough decisive moments in front of goal.
Ng Goes Close
Perry Ng came closest to finding the winner when he struck the crossbar six minutes from time. Yousef Salech inexplicably failed to convert the rebound, which epitomised Cardiff's efforts in front of goal in the second half.
The right-back's effort was one of the clearest expressions of the home side’s late pressure, with Sheffield United increasingly pinned back and content to defend the point.
It was a frustrating conclusion for Cardiff, who had done enough in the second half to make Sheffield United look extremely vulnerable but could not find the final pass or finish to separate the sides.
The Blades had their own second-half opening through Sydie Peck, but Cardiff were the more ambitious side and will feel they let two points slip away.

Opportunity Missed
There were very encouraging individual contributions for Cardiff. Moylan again looked sharp in attacking areas, Ashford registered a goal and an assist, Krystian Bielik put in an outstanding second-half performance, and Trott’s double save prevented a damaging early deficit.
But the draw also highlighted the areas Cardiff must improve.
Robertson’s difficult involvement in the opening goals, the team’s hesitant defending in the first ten minutes and the lack of ruthlessness during a dominant second half meant Cardiff could not convert a strong overall display into a first league win.
Barry-Murphy’s side showed they can more than compete with Championship opposition and controlled long spells against Sheffield United. However, after another draw, the Bluebirds will know that promising performances need to start becoming victories.
