Yousef Salech marked his return from injury with the winning goal as Cardiff City secured a 1-0 victory over Birmingham City at the Cardiff City Stadium.
The Danish forward missed a first-half penalty but responded 10 minutes later, holding off Phil Neumann before turning and finishing Ollie Tanner’s cross. It was Salech’s third Championship goal of the season and enough to end Birmingham’s three-match (& clean sheet) winning run.
Cardiff were deserving winners. They created more of the meaningful chances, defended their lead with increasing maturity and saw Nathan Trott make a vital late save from Demarai Gray to secure a third consecutive home victory.
A Meaningful Afternoon
Both sets of players wore black armbands and observed a minute’s silence before kick-off to mark the 60th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster.
The game was played in relentless rain, while Cardiff had already been forced into an unwanted late change. Krystian Bielik suffered an injury in the warm-up, meaning Salech was promoted from the substitutes’ bench into the starting side and Will Fish came into the defence.
It could easily have unsettled the Bluebirds, but they started positively. Ollie Tanner was a lively threat on the right, while Perry Ng pushed forward from full-back and gave Cardiff an extra option around the Birmingham penalty area.
Salech Makes Amends
Cardiff were awarded a penalty after 21 minutes when Tomoki Iwata pulled Ng down at a corner.
Salech took responsibility, but his low effort lacked the power to beat James Beadle, who pushed the ball to safety. It was Cardiff’s second successive missed penalty after Chris Willock failed to convert against Watford, and for a brief moment it felt as though the opportunity to take control had gone.
Salech did not let the miss affect him. Ten minutes later, Tanner delivered from the right, and the striker used his body well to hold off Neumann. Salech then turned sharply before firing beyond Beadle.
Birmingham protested, believing Neumann had been fouled, but the referee allowed the goal to stand. It was a strong and determined piece of centre-forward play from Salech, particularly considering it was his first appearance in five weeks after a shoulder injury.

Cardiff Carry The Threat
The goal gave Cardiff more confidence. Tanner continued to cause problems with his direct running, while Jack Moylan and Alex Robertson helped keep the ball moving through midfield.
Cardiff’s attacking play was not always flawless, but it had purpose. They worked the ball into wide areas quickly, committed runners into the box and made Birmingham defend rather than allowing the visitors to settle into their usual rhythm.
The visitors had arrived on the back of three straight victories without conceding a goal, but they struggled to impose themselves in the first half. Luis Vázquez could not connect with a Jay Stansfield cross, while Birmingham otherwise offered little threat against a Cardiff side that looked more assured as the game progressed.
Beadle Prevents a Second
Cardiff started the second half with the same intent and should have increased their lead.
Tanner and Salech combined to open up Birmingham early on, creating a chance for Cian Ashford. Beadle made an important save with his legs, and Salech then fired narrowly wide of the post as Cardiff pushed for the second goal that would have put the contest beyond doubt.
Ashford was a constant source of energy, pressing Birmingham’s defenders and looking to make runs beyond Salech. Tanner’s delivery remained Cardiff’s most reliable route to goal, while Moylan’s work in possession helped the Bluebirds keep control of the match.
Chris Willock and Ronan Kpakio were introduced in the second half to provide fresh legs, while Calum Scanlon replaced Bagan as Cardiff managed the game without losing their attacking shape.
Bad day at the office. Gray should have scored and we would have robbed a point. Onto Lincoln #BCFC https://t.co/UA9OILMeSy

Trott Delivers When Needed
Birmingham gradually had more of the ball in the closing stages, but they struggled to test Trott for long periods.
Stansfield’s attempt from Alex Cochrane’s cross was a routine save, while Marvin Ducksch headed a Max Bird delivery wide. Cardiff looked set to see the game out comfortably until Gray found space inside the area two minutes from time.
Trott reacted superbly to keep out the point-blank effort, preserving Cardiff’s lead. It was an important reminder that, although the home side had been on top for much of the afternoon, the goalkeeper still had to be ready for the one moment that could have changed the result.
The late pressure was handled well, with Fish and the reshuffled defence standing firm after Bielik’s pre-match withdrawal.
That’s a mental save from Trott. Gambled and paid off 🧤 https://t.co/t1i97yt8kI

Another Important Home Win
This was Cardiff’s third consecutive home victory and another sign that the side are beginning to find their footing in the Championship.
Salech’s return gives Brian Barry-Murphy another valuable option in attack, while Tanner’s assist and all-round display continued his strong recent form. Trott’s late save, meanwhile, ensured Cardiff had a clean sheet to match their attacking quality.
The missed penalty could have become the defining moment, but Salech’s response showed character. Cardiff were not perfect, and they could have made the result more comfortable, but they were more dangerous, more composed and ultimately deserved the three points.
