Cardiff City began their Championship campaign with a dramatic 1-1 draw against Wrexham, as Rubin Colwill’s superb stoppage-time free-kick rescued a point for the Bluebirds.
Cardiff were forced to chase the game after former City striker Kieffer Moore gave Wrexham a dream start inside three minutes.
Wrexham looked set to hold on for all three points after defending their early advantage resolutely, but Colwill produced a moment of magic in the eighth minute of added time to deny the visitors a derby victory.
Moore Gives Wrexham the Lead
Cardiff started the evening looking to settle quickly in front of a lively home crowd, but they were dealt an early setback inside 3 minutes when Wrexham struck with their first major opportunity. A lofted clearance from Cian Ashford fell to Daniel Imray, who looped the ball forward over the Cardiff backline, allowing Kieffer Moore to take advantage of Gabriel Osho keeping him onside and fire a powerful strike past the Bluebirds stopper Nathan Trott.
Moore, who spent two seasons with the Bluebirds (2020-2022), has relished playing against Cardiff - with a record 7 goals scored against the capital outfit.

The early goal gave Wrexham confidence and forced Cardiff to respond, with the hosts attempting to build pressure through the likes of Jack Moylan, Chris Willock and Cian Ashford.
However, the Bluebirds struggled to cope with Wrexham's intensity and directness in the first 20 minutes and were largely pegged back in their own half during this period.

Cardiff Search for a Response
The Bluebirds grew into the game after Moore's opener and enjoyed plenty of possession as they looked for a way back into the contest, but Wrexham remained a threat whenever they moved forward.
Cardiff found opportunities to deliver into the box, with Yousef Salech leading the line and Ollie Tanner working hard on the right, though clear openings remained difficult to find.
At the other end, Nathan Trott was called upon to make several saves as Wrexham looked to extend their advantage.
Despite Cardiff’s control of the ball, there was a clear lack of cutting edge in the final third and the visitors carried their one-goal lead into half-time.
Colwill Is Introduced
Brian Barry-Murphy turned to his bench shortly after the hour mark, introducing Colwill in place of Tanner as Cardiff searched for greater creativity in the final third.
Joel Colwill was also brought on for Willock, while Callum Robinson, Ronan Kpakio and Isaak Davies were later introduced as the Bluebirds continued to push for an equaliser.
The substitutions gave Cardiff fresh impetus, but Wrexham continued to defend in numbers and looked increasingly close to seeing out the result.

Wrexham Hold Firm
As the game entered its closing stages, Cardiff continued to probe but found Wrexham’s back line difficult to break down.
The visitors had defended their early lead with discipline and had opportunities of their own, registering more shots on target than the hosts across the evening.
But Cardiff kept pressing, earning a series of late set-piece opportunities as the atmosphere inside the stadium grew louder.
It was a pressure that would finally tell.
Colwill Delivers at the Death
With the clock deep into stoppage time, Cardiff were handed one final chance from a free-kick after an unnecessary foul by George Dobson right on the edge of the area.
Colwill stepped up and produced a stinging effort, curling the ball into the net to send the Cardiff City Stadium into late-night rapture. It could be said that Wrexham's new record £8M signing Anthony Patterson should have dealt with the strike better; however, the raw pace of the strike ensured it found the back of the net. It was a moment of composure and magic from the midfielder, with the celebrations that followed, truly epitomising what it meant to academy product Rubin and the Bluebird supporters.

The goal ensured that Cardiff’s persistence was rewarded and left Wrexham devastated after coming so close to an opening-day win.

A Point Earned
For Barry-Murphy, there will be several positives, such as the bright performances of Jack Moylan & Calum Scanlon in particular, to take from a performance in which his side refused to accept defeat.
Cardiff showed huge character to recover from a shocking early setback and continued to search for a way back into the game until the final whistle.
But the headline belongs to Colwill.
After an eventful evening at the Cardiff City Stadium, Cardiff have their first point of the campaign — and Rubin Colwill has once again provided a moment to remember.
